When teaching your dog anything, the goal should be to encourage them to perform the desired action on their own accord. In general we should avoid making them do things and instead make them WANT to do what it is we ask. "Speak" is a great example. No matter how much you want a dog to bark at your request, you cannot force them to. Therefore, we must find a way to motivate them to do this. In this video, I'll show you a way to accomplish this!

  1. I taught my dog to bark/show teeth/growl at a water bottle and only a water bottle when I hold it up. It’s all play to him though and he’s never been aggressive to me. He will also bark at someone if I say “Who is it?”. He barks to let us know that he heard something or that someones at the door and will stop if I say “It’s okay” or “Quiet”. I’m quite proud of him 🙂

I tried this trick with my German Spitz who is REALLY quiet and i thought it was hopeless after 40 minutes. then i remembered that when i go to bed he starts barking a bit because he wants to get on the bed too. so i got on the bed while holding the treats and i started saying the word “bark” while he was trying to get up, he barked so i gave him a treat then he barked again and i gave him another treat. we did this 6-7 times and then i got of the bed and told him to bark and he did!!! now he barks on command. the point here is, if your dog does not bark after a long time of trying try to remember when is he barking and use it as a starting point.

    3. That’s a great idea! My beagle mix only barks if someone knocks on the door but the thing is you cant just leave then knock on the door he will know it is you. I thought of doing it but then i realized like how am i gonna do it lol. So im thinking for someone to come over and keep knocking lol and i will do what u did… lets hope it works lmao

    4. I wanted to try this while playing the piano because my dog barks then, but i am afraid i will encourage her barking at the piano oinstead of barking on command

  4. I feel pointed when he says “Dont  be a boring dog trainer”. Sometimes I’m so tired I cant express anything while waiting my dog to do something. Have to work on it.

      Anyway I think I understand my dog after all. She is quite sensitive and sometimes can be shy if strong activity is in front of her. We passed trhought two months of dog adolescence when she didnt want to learn anything and pulled leash all the time, but now she’s calm down and starting to learn again. I know she is more learnful at the start and the end of the walks and not when she has a lot of energy and an urge to run and play. She is quite inteligent and polite compared to other young dogs I know.

    4. javed naved You have to be an interesting person for your dog to not get bored, if your dog is not a “people pleaser”. Some dogs don’t have a drive for training.

    edit: 4 years have passed, i have changed as a person. looking back to the comment is like going on a time trip lol.

    3. @Romy Joy my dog hears my dad’s car coz it’s loud and jumps straight on the couch and when he hears the door he stands there thinking it’s my dad coz he loves my dad

  12. Thanks! Trained my puppy this and he now barks everytime I say “speak!”. However it seems to backfire a little. I noticed he barks a lot now since I taught him to speak XD. Now I have to learn to stop him from barking XD

    2. To teach not to bark, they first need to know how/when to bark on command. E.i. they need to understand what speak means. Then you can teach a command to stop barking. I use “quiet” or “enough”.

    2. Your videos are awesome u have really helped me in training my pekinese mix shes very smart she gives paw sits waits drops it when i tell her she knows lay down teaching speak more challenging but i don’t give up so easy

    3. I have a question I was teaching my dog to speak and he did really well but now any time I sit down and eat he barks at me for my food. Am I doing something wrong?

  16. When I tried this my dog staire at me like I’m done I set a 20 minute timer and he just looked at me like bruh gimmie my stiff

    2. SAME. I adopted my jackabee from the pound and I’ve only ever heard him bark like 6 times in the last 7 months. Trying to teach him to bark is near impossible
