  1. Many time watcher, 1st time poster. People will always find a way to get to you, man! Don’t worry about it. Keep up the good work. I love your videos. I do be skipped some videos but whenever I feel like I need to teach my dog something I always look for your videos.

    1. People are just jealous of Zak probably because he’s the biggest on Youtube.
And if you ask me, he’s the biggest for a reason.
I learned so much from you Zak, and with that my puppy.
In puppy class there is nothing to learn, because Lola already knows everything, lol.
      Thank you so much Zak.
And indeed don’t care about those comments from those jealous people.
Just keep up the good work.

  2. Hey,
First of all, sorry if my English is not so good. I am not a native speaker.
Now, the point of what I want to say. In your last videos I notice you are concerned about people opposing you and doubting you who are from a more negative, “corrections”-based training style.
You do not need to defend yourself. Keep up your work to teach people the positive way of training. I feel like using tools like prong collars and e collars has become a trend in the USA, and people view it as “modern”. So that’s why it might feel like those opposing you are becoming stronger. But you are not alone. Here in middle Europe, prongs and E-collars are forbidden. In Sweden where I am now, even crates are forbidden.
I do not want to offend anyone – I do not say “we in Europe are doing things better than you in America!” – for example I think that a crate can be really good and is often misunderstood here in middle Europe, my dog for example has a lot less separation anxiety in the crate with a locked door than outside the crate or if I leave when the crate door is open. I just say, you are not alone by favouring the positive approach, and keep believing in what you do. Sometimes there is more than one solution or more than one perfect way of doing something and there is no need to defend your way.

Also, I just gotta vent about people saying they deliver a “prong collar correction”. That’s just a nice way for saying punishment. Correction would be correcting the wrong behavior by showing the right i think. Not just punishing wrong.

  3. Zak, love to hear your thoughts on this question. Obviously, dogs must be exercised, and must be exercised first before trying to try them before tricks. With those prerequisites understood, do you find physical + mental stimulation more efficient than just physical? If so, how much more efficient? Is the need for physical + mental more important in some breeds than others?

For example, hypothetically, let’s say I had to do game of catch for an hour with my dog for my dog to feel content. If I mixed in 5-10 mins of mental challenges, how long do you think we’d have to play catch to get the same level of contentment? Let me know if my question is confusing.

  4. I’ve wanted to teach “back stall” to my Boston but couldn’t figure out how to break it down slow enough for him to attempt it. After seeing it I’m like “Duh.. Of course”. Now to see if it’s his thing. Thanks Zak!

  5. I became a first time dog owner 12 months ago and honestly, your videos and book were and still are invaluable. I still recommend you to everyone I see with a puppy or anyone that’s struggling in general!

  6. I would love to teach my dogs the back stall, but one is 70 lbs – he would squish me – and the other has stubby legs – she can’t jump very high. But it looks really cool.

  7. Nothing wrong with trick training. Absolutely nothing! It enriches and works the dogs brain. IMO the more you train dogs to do a variety of things, the smarter a dog you’ll have. Many small breeds seem to be kinda dumb and I believe though part may be genetics, people just don’t train them to do a whole lot so they don’t use their brain much. And if you don’t exercise your brain it won’t be as strong.
I taught my dog growing up a lot of tricks, and he was a pretty smart dog. He was a little cockapoo. He knew beg (to which he added himself where he waved his front legs up and down), roll over, speak, shake, and “dance” (standing up and twirling around once).

  8. How fun was that video!!!! Veronica and Bree doing a back stall was priceless. I really enjoyed this one, the laid back training with great results and beautiful surroundings. I’ve watched it twice just to take it all in. Makes me want to head up to Yosemite or Kings Canyon right now but the roads are closed due to snow. Definitely on the to do list for summer. Both of my dogs will have an adventure to look forward to with a little training thrown in. I have 20 ft leashes for them to explore and be safe. Big Sequoia trees, were you in Sequoia National Park?

  9. Great fun. So glad you got to enjoy the special Redwood forests with the dogs. Great training by doing, while being conscious of your impact on the delicate environment. Thanks for sharing.

  10. I got a puppy during one of the lockdowns and I spent my days training him with your online course and YouTube videos. He listens to me when I give a command, he doesn’t steal my food or run off when I open the front door. He has great recall when we are out walking all because of your training methods 😀 I still have work to do with him especially around being possessive of me when my other dogs are around me but on the whole I wouldn’t have gotten so far with him without your teachings. I still come on and watch your vids. I always recommend you to people when friends/ family get puppies and even online in some of the groups I joined. What I forgot to say first time around was Thank You!

  11. What a fun and helpful video! I’m not sure I could handle my 55 lb bulldog on my back but it’s so cool to see how much Veronica learned from that trick as well as how much her confidence was boosted! It just goes to show that “training tricks” really provides new and fun ways for us to communicate and bond with our dogs! 💜

  12. It’s a joy to watch little Veronica figure life out! BTW, I like the term “evidence-based training.” It describes the training accurately without the baggage of the term “science-based.”
