The BIGGEST Mistake People Make When Teaching A Puppy To Drop Things

One of the skills that we teach our puppies really early in their lives is how to "drop it". That's why in this video, I'm going to show you how to teach your puppy to drop things. Puppies explore the world with their mouths, so it's a great skill to teach your young dog, to avoid disaster, but also to demonstrate some leadership for your young and impressionable puppy. It's a fairly simple process and as you'll see, your puppy will find this exercise to be lots of fun!

  1. Having a reliable “drop it” is an important part of playing “fetch” with your dog. If you’re looking for some tips to teach your puppy to have a speedy retrieve, check out this video from our channel: Teach Your Puppy To Fetch And LOVE To Bring The Toy Back – https://youtu.be/gH1rZwolIZ4

It’s nice to be back from Christmas break, I’m excited about 2019 on the McCann Dog Training channel! Happy Training! ~Ken

    1. Does not work with my labrador puppy. He’s always onto me whenever I have treats no matter how odorless they may be. He’s too distracted by the smell to give it a go at his favorite toy. He just keeps sniffing me all over.

    2. Thank you so much Ken 😌 I’m a faithful new friend and I really like this channel alot already! U have awesome lessons 🙂 pleased to meet you and your channel ☺️ pleasure to be here! See you soon 🔜 be safe

  2. I wish I had this 20 years ago when I first got a puppy. We’re about to be an 8 week old pugs family in a few days and are really getting a lot out of your videos. Thank you so much (from Australia).

    1. What’s important is that you’ve got it now, Stacey! I’m glad you’re enjoying our channel. Happy Training with your new four-legged family member! ~Ken

  3. Doesn’t work with my dog. He’s a lab with a nose that can smell a treat a mile away. He knows when I have treats and when I don’t. He doesn’t listen when I don’t have any treats.

    1. My 12 week old pup is an absolute nightmare with food too! If he smells it that’s it his brain goes into overdrive and he starts jumping all over me or nipping me I’ll stand and turn my back until he’s calm but it never lasts long 😢

    2. @Chaimaine Smith we had this exact problem and used crate training along with conditioning the word “No.”
We started like you trying to disengage but it didn’t seem to stop the enthusiasm. Putting them in the crate til they calm down (and stopped whining) then trying again seemed to work with a verbal warning letting them know what they were doing was unacceptable.
The added benefit is since training ‘no’ we can use it to get her to stop what she’s doing from quite some distance.

    3. @luciferdern I’m definitely thinking of crate training him he’s 14 weeks now and is getting nowhere with training in or out the home he’ll listen to my husband but look at me as though I’m stupid 🤦

    4. @Chaimaine Smith I’m no expert but it sounds like he may have decided that you are below him in pack order. And needs to be shown who’s boss in a soft way.

Another thing we do, and I don’t know how widely accepted this is, but when we want our dog to stop something and we know she knows what she’s doing is wrong and she’s testing us, we’ll grab her collar and hold her down for a short duration.

Not hard and never enough to hurt the dog. But a momentary limitation of freedom that shows her who’s boss. I got the idea from watching wolves discipline their children though obviously they’re a lot meaner than we’d ever be. This was amazingly effective at stopping her trying to steal our food while we ate within reach.

  4. Ahhh yes – The Hide Behind the Couch Routine! I know it well, these days!! And, the round the trees, behind the rose bushes, under the lawn furniture… This video will be SO helpful – THANK YOU, KEN!

  5. Hope this works. When my dog grabs something and I tell her to drop it, she makes me chase her around the room. Last thing she took was a skein of yarn. By the time she dropped it, it was all over the room.

  6. Using the “dead toy” “out” can be hard with some tough dogs. I’ve had to brace the tug against my thigh and myself against a wall with strong dogs, otherwise I’m just an extra weight to swing around on the other end of the tug ! It’s more like a wrestling match with some dogs and a serious work out !

  7. This channel is by far the best of its kind on YouTube. What a brilliant resource for training. We have a rehomed 19 week old Border ColliexGreyhound/Saluki 😊

  8. Hello. We received “Buddy”,our puppy, at 8 weeks. He’s a “ROTTSHEP”. His Dad is a full breed Rottweiler and his mom is a full breed German Shepherd. We want the best for him. Love,Care and Safety. Training tips that we have seen by your videos has been useful for him and for us. We need to work some more with him but he is responding great. Thank you very much.

    1. I have the same problem 😃 hopefully we can put a end to this with the help of this amazing teacher 😃 great channel 👍 I love your advice ❤️🙏 awesome Job ☺️

    2. @Yes I Said It yes I have the same thing happening lately!! My favorite boots are getting destroyed 😂 no more of that stuff! I really think this is going to work for us all!! Lmk how it goes for you 😉 good luck with your training!!

  9. New friend here 😁 thank you 😄 great job and keep up the good work ☺️ visit me soon ☺️ have a wonderful New Year Everyone ☺️ stay safe and be kind to yourself and others and especially to your pet 🐕☺️ and all mankind!! Spread love and kindness 😊💕

    1. Try constantly having some treats on you all day. I keep some in my pocket so my dog doesn’t suddenly think it’s training time every time I pick some up.

  10. I feel like every pup are different when it comes to listening. While some treats work with my 16 week Lab like for potty training and walking besides me. Other commands I feel like she understands more with the tone or emotion of my voice. I use “let it go” for her to drop her toy and the word “go” I do a low-long sounding gooooo and she starts loosening up her toy. And for her to come I do a happy perky voice and she hurries up to me right away!

  11. Hahahahaah ken! Your thumbnails are killer!

I wanted to let you know that we truly appreciate your hard-work and attention to detail
