  1. Training stay is about taking control of your dogs. This is you telling them no access to the environment until you wait for me to release you. There by establishing leadership and demanding respectful behavior inorder for them to gain access. The dog is not really left with an alternative option. So yes teaching stay is awesome because it establishes leadership in a none confrontational way

  2. I have a hyper girl very smart. I totally forget to teach her stay. She’s 10 months but learned after the third command. With that trick under her belt I’ve seen a change in her demeanor she tries to calm herself down

  3. Yes, I taught our Yorkie the do that when I take her out to potty. I want her to know she can’t dash out an open door, as she’s a runner.

  4. Stay/stay type command is also for their safety. If someone visiting opens a door facing the street or even getting in/out of vehicle “stay” Could keep them from running out in the street and getting hit by traffic.

  5. Call me crazy, but MAKING GOOD DECISIONS Is what my dog training is based upon. Dogs are intelligent and I don’t want to have an obedience robot, I want to have a dog that does the right thing.

    1. @Jordan Bendt Oh hell, yes. It’s a long road and it needs everything perfectly in place. But in the end, when all the pieces click together, I am much more happy with my dogs that do the right thing without me micromanaging them than I would be with an obedience monster that does 200 tricks on demand.
I can let my girls run free and the only real commands I need are “Stop”, “Leave it” and “Come”. They can run freely, they make the right decision and even when there is deer around, I can call them back from 300 feet away. They obey regardless and they do so because they love and respect me..
