Why You Should Try a Longer Leash if Your Dog Pulls #dogtraining #dogtrainer #dogtraining101 #puppy

Why should you use a longer leash?

I’m not saying a long leash should replace your shorter lead in every instance. But practicing with your dog on a long lead can be a game-changer if you’ve been struggling to break through on loose leash walking.

    1. Why should you use a longer leash?

I’m not saying a long leash should replace your shorter lead in every instance. But practicing with your dog on a long lead can be a game-changer if you’ve been struggling to break through on loose leash walking 🎉

It gives you so many more opportunities to reward the behaviors you DO like because your dog is naturally less likely to pull when they have a little more freedom.

I recommend doing exercises like I cover in this episode in addition to your regular leash training like we also cover frequently on this channel 😊

In fact, it can be a great idea to start a training session with a “free walk” on a long lead like this, and THEN practice some focused leash training on a standard shorter leash immediately after…

  1. I use a 25 ft retractable leash for my german shepherd she loves it she gets to smell all she want and i dont need to stop and wait i just keep walking and she catches up and she can get a head start on smells too and just has more freedom and is still easily controlled. People look at me like im crazy meanwhile they got there dog on a 4ft leash with a harness struggling the whole time and making you and the dog upset

  2. Hey Zach, we’ve been really struggling with getting our one year old retriever’s attention on walks, we’ve been using a long line to allow her to wander and heavily rewarding when she comes back to us, responds to a call, looks at us etc. Although our dog trainer has said that allowing her to sniff around while on walks is self rewarding behaviour which could be having a negative effect on attention. What do you think?

Should note the trainer didn’t say not to let her sniff and explore, but just to limit her access to it.

  3. I just need to vent. I was with my dog for 14 years from the time she was 2 months old until she died in my arms. People say to me in my grief that they are sorry and that pets are family too. Why do people say that? I spent almost every single day with her for 14 years. No human comes within a mile of that. We need to have more respect for our non human relationships and give us bereavement leave. The last month has been some of the worst days of my life. And never say that “they are family too” what a disservice.

    1. Yes. My dog died recently aged 15. When family members died I only cried for a few days but I am still struggling not to cry for Jasper and it’s nearly 3 months. There’s one dog I still cry for who died in the last century! My comfort is that Jasper and Bran are friends together waiting for me on the other side.

    2. I’m sorry for you loss. I know there really aren’t any words that can help, but know that many of us have experienced what you’re going through and understand where you are coming from. I agree with you about the need for bereavement leave.

    3. @Jen Kirby I’m sorry for your loss. It’s a great comfort to me to think I’ll see my dogs and cats that have died again and I’ll never have to feel that pain again. We’ll be together forever.

  4. I don’t like extending leashes. (One reason is that I find them hard to use and also they are very awkward when the dog runs round and round a tree.) But I have a long leash that is bright orange and easy to see. So when my friend wanted to take Marzieh to the park I gave her the long leash. She came back and told me that people were laughing at her. She’s rather a conventional person. I don’t get criticism but I am known to be an eccentric.

  5. When my dog was a puppy, I started using a long line for a “sniffari” for socialization, and 3 years later, we still go out every morning! He’s better on leash AND better at home when he gets all that time for seeking and “reading the news.”
