Building Attention: Game 1 – dog training

This video goes over one game of how to train your dog to pay attention to you in distracting environments.
If you find that your dog is not interested in the game, try the game with higher level reinforcement- better treats (or toys), move to a less distracting environment, more to an area where you can run more (yet is safe)- as you could see in my video my yard was almost too small to play this game as its really moving fast and away that encourages a dog to run to you.

  1. Excellent game to get you started with attention on…. you = fun:)) love where you suggest roll a treat along for them as it provides more fun for your dog to chase it..much more fun than just be given from the hand..a mixture of the two would be great:)) I like exercises taught, where it is safe, off leash…so that everything is their choice:))

  2. You make it seem so easy. My 16 week AmStaff puppy sometimes doesn’t care at all about what I do. Even the most delicious treats don’t help. She’s a clever little girl when she wants to be but when shes not in the mood nothing seems to get her attention no matter how much I make myself exciting or whatever delicious treat I am offering. Hopefully this will change once she grows some more.

  3. I just played this game with my dog.He absolutly loved it and is alot more interested this way than with the work we normally do! So thanks alot, once again a great video πŸ˜€

  4. Hello Emily
This looks great! And love the demo of all feet on the ground and then treat.
Though, I have a question. Once your puppy already follows you everywhere and pays attention, how do you fade the treats/reward then?

  5. This looks great but i have actually had to do the opposite. I have a border collie pup that is 8 months old now and she loves to chase everything that runs. I have taught her to ignore running people by rewarding her for not chasing me when i run. She is still tempted sometimes though. There was a great example today when someone took off running right next to her. She turned to chase but immediately corrected herself and went back to look for her hidden tennisball.

  6. @GoldenBrandon131997 Yes. the point is for the puppy to want to be with you in any environment- so if you run off the puppy runs with you, rather than runs off to chase squirrels. It also teaches a puppy if they do run after you- not to bite or jump when they get to you but run along side you (great for the Fast exercise in Rally obedience). and great for not knocking down and biting running kids.

  7. very good advice, I like the fact that it’s waiting for the dog to choose to be with you. It makes sense why this would work so well, this is in fact how I train heel too πŸ™‚

  8. @kikopup Thank you so much for posting these videos. I have a 9 week old Australian Shepherd and watching these videos encouraged me to use clicker training on him. It’s also encouraged me to get off my butt and think about pursuing dog training as a career. Do you do this full time? Did you train under anyone or just teach yourself with your own dogs? You’re currently my puppy-training guru!

  9. my boyfriend got a siberian husky and we just started using a clicker, we have found these videos extreamly helpfull and easy to follow πŸ™‚ its amazing how fast she catches on!

  10. This is helpful. I used something similar when I was teaching my rescue her name, to come to me, and that I was more interesting than the neighbor’s dog barking at her. Still needs some work, but I think I definitely ought to look into getting a clicker because the noise is louder and harder to ignore than my voice. But sometimes I put her in a large fenced area so she can just run and burn off some energy, and now she prefers just to hang around me and look at me expectantly xD
