    1. I use harness on my American bully xl and he walks perfect to heel … if dogs going pull he’s going to pull on either harness or a collar it’s the training that makes them not pull

    2. I use a flat collar and leash but when we do search and rescue work we use a harness because I like her to know the difference between the two activities (walking and searching!) when walking, while my dog CAN heel and we practice for safety reasons etc the majority of the time she’s walking at her own pace sniffing and enjoying the walk! 🙂 thankfully there’s also lots of off lead areas here in Ireland too where she can really enjoy herself.

    1. I think a dog will pull on anything if they have not been properly trained on what to do when they feel that pressure. The trick is to condition the dog to pressure and teach the dog that when it feels the pressure it needs to turn back to you instead of pulling harder. Once a dog knows this trick you can use anything to walk the dog. Its less about the tool and more about your engagement with the dog and creating that drive that makes him want to focus more on you which requires a lot of patience, commitment and consistency! The keys to relationship building!

  1. I hate when my puppy pulls with just her collar on and she chokes herself! I use a harness so she doesn’t hurt herself while she is learning to walk on a leash. Side note: she is doing really good on her leash training and heel thanks to your videos Zak! Still working on not lunging towards birds though..

    1. I have a dog that pulls when fearful. In a quiet place that she is secure in she walks at my side beautifully. Helping her confidence took priority over ‘heel’ walking. Still a ways to go but watching zaks video series helped/helps tremendously

  2. I dont believe a harness incourages or causes a dog to pull. I do feel that the dog has a better chance of pulling away from an uneducated owner with a harness because they can pull with more of their bodies. Just as pulling or sled dogs use their whole bodies to pull with harness on. Because you know how to react to a powerful puller you can stop them, but an unsuspecting owner would not have stopped the dog you are handling.

  3. I use a harness with a front attachment as well as a top attachment. But I only use the back attachment on my very old dog with the shaky hind legs to help support him. I use the front fastener on my young enthusiastic dog. If she tries to pull she can’t put her weight behind it or it pulls her round towards me.

  4. When my dog goes out and is going farther than the our yard we do use a harness since I think it’s better for her. But I don’t think she really likes it, she gets over whatever weird feelings she has, cause after a few minutes she is ready to go! For daily walks/bathroom walks we just her collar since that’s what she’s most comfortable with, if she loved her harness I’d probably use it more often.

  5. This is a good video on how not to walk/train a dog! Get rid of the harness (especially while training) and use a slip collar or just a rope in a loop). This is the first video I watched of Zak George’s dog training (and the last!). He sucks!!

  6. Zak, please stop what you are doing! You should never walk a dog with tension on the leash! The dog is walking you, not you walking the dog!!
Please, I beg you, stop training dogs! (And your videos)!!!

The dog is not lunging at the ducks because the dog wants to, but because you’re not in control!!

    1. So this series is already complete and there are 17 episodes on YouTube you can watch and you can see how my approach differs from yours. I’m not saying that you cannot stop pulling with your method I just choose to take a different path that really keeps stress to a minimum to the best of my ability. And I will admit sometimes I fail at that as a dog trainer. That dog taught me so much.

  7. I will always use a harness
It not good for dogs to actually choke themselves

Plus I had a time where my dog got his collar off his head!!

Even now, with my new dog, I put a collar on in the backyard when I bathe him, and he can easily get that collar off
But if I put it on tighter, it can choke him

    So harness all the way

  8. Generally dogs pull because they are enthused by a stimulus. They continue to pull because they’re owner/handler has allowed them to get access to the stimulus(self rewarding). Use the dogs want to please their handler. Short correction when pulling, praise/reward for not pulling. Don’t allow access to the stimulus unless the dog is presenting the behaviour you want. Be consistent, correct as required, reward the good behaviour. It’s sooooooo much easier to train a dog that knows what their left and right of arc is…
