Dog training tutorial: how to purse train / crate train a dog

This video goes over the steps on how to teach your toy dog to love being in a purse. One of the main reasons that people get small dogs is for the convenience of being able to take them where ever they go. One way of taking dogs everywhere is by concealing them in a purse.

This tutorial goes over the basic steps of purse training, and if you have a large dog, this video will also be of interest because you can use the same techniques for crate training as well as teaching cute tricks that are used in movies and commercials- like a dog going into a suitcase or a dog going into a shopping bag, you name it!

The go to your mat video that I refer to in this video is found at:

  1. In Brazil, we have little literature on clicker training. Therefore, your videos have helped me a lot, even not speaking English I can learn a lot. Thank you. 5 *

  2. haha, “If you’re one of those impatient people”. . . um, guilty!

In my opinion, learning to teach and train my pup has been one of the best lessons in patience I have ever experienced. . . and you have been instrumental in the training of ME! xo

  3. They take forever to make! It took me all day yesterday making this one and its still a little all over the place (if you hadn’t noticed)

    I will try! ! !

  4. Thanks Sian!

I do love having my little dog, but if you ever get one, I suggest you get a furry one! Mine lives in Southern California and SHIVERS year round when shes not on her heating pad!

  5. Oh I love how you work with your dogs! And I love Kiko! I tink I am going to try that purse thing with my Border Collie later. Not that its necessary, but it looks like a lot of fun 🙂 Thank you for this tutorial!

  6. Great video! My puppy used to not mind being in a bag, but I haven’t used one lately as I’m trying to socialize her more with new people. This might come in handy though when I want to start bringing her places in a bag again. Thank you!

  7. 5* for another awesome tutorial:)! Kiko really loves going into bags:). Seeing Splash go in the bag was so cute! Then you were able to lift her too! I probably would not have been able to lift Kaine since he is 83 lbs!

    Happy Clicking!

  8. Thanks a lot! my mom got my pup a hard crate…and i started some of your tips prior to seeing this video. So you other tip about the option to stay is great

  9. When we got our tiny pup, Niko, we took him literally everywhere we went. He was so tiny and we were afraid that our cats may try to eat him if left alone. 10 years later and he still LOVES going out in his purse! One time, we had to take Niko with us to the hospital b/c my mom needed to sign up for hours. We let him out after we got to the break room. At one point, he had a little accident (he was still a very young pup) and someone saw and said “Oh my god! That is so cute!” His little piddle mess was the size of a quarter! Also, for those of you that are worried about the dogs not being able to breathe in their purse, purses that are designed specifically for dogs have mesh siding so they can breathe. The bag I currently use was found on Amazon.

  10. Thank you SO MUCH for this – the other Google results were telling me to sedate her, but she’s just a non-anxious dog who needs a little training, and this is in preparation for a three-day road trip. This was perfect, thanks!

  11. The amazing thing is, my little dog Shasta really didn’t need a lot of training! She is about the size of Kiko (hope I didn’t spell it wrong) and she decided she loved fitting herself into a tiny dog carrier that acted as a basket on my bike. It was funny to see her get all worked up when I grabbed it. I taught her “get in” and “get out”.

  12. Thank you. You’re amazing, and Kiko and Splash are darling. I’m definitely going to try this with my new pup because I’ll need her to travel with me. Go well xx

  13. Thank you for your tutorials!! My Chihuahua, Pebble, used to hate the idea of being in a bag but after I taught her to enjoy it she keeps jumping in my bags!!

  14. Thanks so much. Managed to train my Chihuahua to go into a backpack with your video. Its so handy and he loves going on the bike with me. :0)

  15. Thanks for this video. In only a day my dog stopped avoiding the backpack and now looks inside searching for more. I want to ride with him in my motorbike
