  1. @sodalimegirl I would definitely keep this dog in a crate at all times & bring her out several times & bring her to the right area to relieve herself. Keep her in for periods a little longer at a time so you can train her bladder, so to speak. Like Emily says, your eyes have to be glued to her at all times! I’d also recommend you have a vet check her. At 5 months she should be able to hold herself for a couple of hours.

  2. This worked on my dog she now sits at the door and whines when she needs to go. We have had an accident every once in a while but she does well telling us. The accidents are mostly our fault of ignoring her. πŸ™‚ so ya thank you πŸ™‚

  3. Housebreaking my rescued dog has been a pain in the butt with little information out there as to how to get an adolescent dog to stop peeing inside. This was extremely useful advice, thank you!

  4. This young lady is very good! She was reasonable about expectations and explained in a way that made sense. She was in no way trying to sell us anything. thumbs up.

  5. I keep coming back to KIKOPUP training videos because the instructions are clear…both spoken and written, and the examples using real dogs make it easy to understand how to do the training. Excellent videos to back up what I learn in books and during dog training classes (10 to 12 dogs and their owners) at Marin Humane Society where I also volunteer.

  6. Hi Emily,
Many people have trouble with a young adult male dog who has started marking in the house. A friend of mine has the problem now and asked me how to fix it! I suggested that he check out your channel. Do you have a video up about this?
Thanks from a very faithful follower – have purchased 3 of your videos and given 2 away so must replace them soon in my library! Keep up the AWESOME work. It is so great to be able to direct new dog owners to your channel. You are improving the lives of so many dogs!!!

  7. This was such a great video, thanks! I feel like my puppy always pees when I get up for a second, having her onΒ a leash nearby would solve that problem because she wouldn’t leave my sight. And we hang out on the 2nd floor so your comment about the corner was spot on. THANK YOU for such a thorough video.

  8. For deaf dogs you can tap the dog on the shoulder and give a thumbs (and a big smile) up sign or an open flash of the (in place of the sound of a clicker). Great advice especially keeping the pup on a leash. Potty first, and when they are done their reward can be to come of the leash and explore. Great training tips!Β

    1. Hi there! Where do you give the “thumb up” Surely not up the poor doggies bum!? And what would would I do if the poor creature is deaf AND blind? He won’t see the thumb going up. (But he surely would FEEL it! Wouldn’t he??) Please advise further. Thankyou!

  9. This advice was so helpful to me. Thank you! It was clear and concise filled with many tips, examples and scenarios. Many of the things you mentioned not to do because it will teach your puppy to pee in the house are mistakes that I made because the past information I read was more general. Now I’ve been wondering how I can fix this problem & so the pups have been spending more and more time in their dog yard. But we want them to learn to be with us in the house. Now I feel that I have the insight on just how I screwed things up and steps I can take to remedy.

  10. HI! First of all, thank you so much for your videos, they’ve been of great help. I have a 5 months old Puppy and when we got him, since he didn’t have all his vaccines, we trained him to do his business inside of the house in Pee Pads. He is so smart that after two days he was already potty trained (I think that’s how it’s called).Β
The thing is that after two or three weeks at home, when he got all his vaccines, we started to leave the backyard door open for him to go out whenever he wanted to and we walked him several times a day so he never had the need of using the pads again, the problem is that he got so used to doing his business outside that he forgot what the pee pads are for (he sometimes even takes his naps on them) and when we leave him alone (usually not more than 4/5 hours a day) he does his business all over the house, even when we leave some “strategic” pee pads here and there.
    Any suggestions?!
Thank you so much once again.

  11. LOL the harsh truth from Emily. Puppies are a nightmare and yet also somehow wonderful. I’m a dog trainer and my mother is getting her first ever dog tomorrow. Out of all the thousands of potty training resources out there on on the web, this is the one i’ll be sending her. Very clear and thorough, Kikopup videos are always a solid choice.

  12. I love you Kikopup. You’re so incredibly knowledgeable. Your videos have helped so much — my wife and I adopted a 3-month old GSP and it’s been very difficult. We were doing well for a while, but recently (since we moved and I started working from home) she seems to have just forgotten all her housetraining and developed anxiety. She barks like crazy now when I leave, and will pee inside even though she just came in from the backyard.
    Sigh… back to square 1.

    1. I know this is very late but kikopup has some videos for dogs with anxiety i think, or just get the dog used to being alone by doing gestures thatnur gonna leave and dont end up leaving this will confuse the doggo and by doing it for a while the dog will get calmer then try leaving it with a toy and leave the house recording how much time he/she stays calm and repeat for a longer time

  13. Thanks so much for your videos, Emily! They are really helping us get a game plan down for our new puppy (2 months old). I know the video is not about that, but I’d love to hear more about “when you were a child in Africa!”, how interesting!

    1. hi everyone ,if anyone else wants to uncover how can you train your dog try Magonsi Clever Canine Expert (just google it ) ? Ive heard some great things about it and my mate got amazing success with it.

  14. Thank you! Just brought home a rescue dog yesterday; I was told she was house trained. She is NOT! And now she’s gone a few times in the house I was starting to freak out because I knew that would encourage more. But thank you so much for the Nature’s Miracle recommendation!! I have that!! Pulled it out of the depths of my cleaning cupboard and washed down the 3 spots she has peed. Hopefully that will help as we go forward!

  15. Thank you so much for this video! You shared so many great ideas I hadn’t thought of! I’ve housetrained two dogs and wanted to study up since I applied to adopt a rescue that’s two years old and not yet housetrained. I’ve been through the crazy early weeks of hourly walks throughout the night to crate train a really young puppy and I’m ready for anything because when you put in the work it pays off!! This was incredibly helpful and I took notes with a few questions sprinkeld in!

Question: My six year old pup is a pro and doesn’t even know how to use a wee wee pad πŸ™‚ She’s so good about going outside, I can probably count on my hand the few times she’s had accidents. Do you think that will help get the new dog into a routine?

Anyway here’s my top takeaways :

1- if you see the dog peeing in the house, call them to go with you and go outside — disrupt what theyre doing to show the right behavior. Already believed in the importance of positive training and creating a level of trust so the dog isn’t scared of making mistakes in front of me but REALLy helpful to hear the idea so I can take action in the moment and use a mistake as a helpful learning experience.
*My instinct would be just to hide my emotional reaction and remove the dog to another closed off area so I could clean up immediately and prevent any lingering odors…I guess it’s more important to take the training opportunity and take a hit for the clean up?
*Also, what about if you live on the 20th floor in an apartment and there is inevitably a 2 minute wait to get outside? Is it hopeless to try to get them to finish peeing outside by then or still worth it to reinforce the right behavior?

2-Use Nature’s Miracle to douse area with enzymatic cleanser to train the dog that the area of peeing is not a toilet. Use that area to associate it with training or put a water bowl!!

3-Just because they peed on leash doesn’t mean they won’t pee 15 minutes later or during lull in activities

4-Walk them through the areas that they would be tempted to pee on in the house as you’re on the way out so they can practice not choosing that place!
