How to paint your pets portrait

This is a tutorial on how to paint your own pet portrait without having a background in art. I myself do pet portraits but went to the Slade School of Fine Art in London England, however I learned some tricks along the way for those who have no clue about drawing or art. Hope you enjoy creating your very own painting of your pet!

Here are the colors I used:

Titanium White
French Ultramarine Blue
Burnt Sienna (a brown)
Burnt Umber (a dark brown)
Alizeran Crimson (a red)
Cadmium Yellow
Cadmium Orange

Other colors that are a good beginners palate:
Cadmium Red
Yellow Ochre

Mars Black (however you can mix black from the primary colors, or create a nice off black by mixing burnt sienna and ultramarine blue) My tip is to never use real black in your painting except in tiny quantities.

If you find that the graphite has dirtied your picture, simply wash it off with soap and water.

If you let the painting dry between layers, or if you blow dry your painting between layers, you will be able to erase any mistakes you make on the top layer with a little warm water and a sponge.

Tip: Change your water constantly so that it is clear. If you mix colors with muddy water you will get a muddy painting

Tip: For fine lines and edges make sure to add a little water for a smoother easier to paint line.

Tip: Dole out the money for the smallest brush sizes, as buying a cheap small sized brush will just cause you heart ache and frustration.

This same method can be used for painting any animal or human portrait.

See you next time!!!!!

  1. fantastically articulated Em, I love the idea of anyone and everyone making a painting of their pet! Plus you’ve managed to combine two of your passions! Nice.

  2. Emily, this video is so cool! I am no good at drawing but I’m going to try this out as I love doing crafts and the method you used makes me think that I have a chance of being able to do this! you made me laugh with the Kiko being excited thing too!

  3. Thank you so much for the wonderful video! I love drawing, but I usually just draw in a cartoony style. I’ve always had trouble with traditional media, especially painting because I didn’t know how to start off. But this video was the inspiration that I needed to get out all of my paints again. :)) Would you be able to post videos of different techniques and medias? I’ve seen your pet portrait website and it is amazing. Do you ever work with chalk or charcoal? Cheers~ :)) Hayley & Indi

  4. I love this idea, and also reading all the comments and ideas from others. I think my grandson would love to try this, too! Please do make more videos like this, showing us how to bring art and our pets together, whether on this channel or another. Just let us know where to find you! azmauigirl

  7. What a great video! You really inspired me.
As soon as I watched it and read the comments, I decided to try it. I don’t have any paint or brushes or canvas, so I used the colored pencils that I do have. I haven’t done much in the past with them other than coloring in a few images I stamped. But I LOVE the way it turned out!
I posted my short video as a reply. It’s just a short video from the photos I took.. Thank-you!

  8. I’m definitely going to give this a try… After my end of year exams. Something to look forward to! I was never very good at painting (ceramic artist and photographer instead!), but who cares! It’s all about having fun, right?!

  9. I will definitely be doing this! I’ve only made portraits with dry medias, I’ve found paints to be pretty intimidating. This looks very easy to do!

  10. When I have room to get into acrylic painting, I’m going to try this. I subscribed because I like the way you do the portraits, and will check out other videos.

  11. I love this! I am in the middle right now. I have two coats, my background, and the first coat of the shape of my dog. This is my very first painting, like, ever. But my boyfriend thinks that I am artistic, so he bought me all the supplies I need for my birthday, so for his birthday (this Sunday) I am painting a picture of his dog, but she is a Mastiff, so very different from the dogs you painted. I am taking pics as I go… Fingers crossed…. 🙂

  12. I think this is a very nice tutorial. Also, tracing is fine. Many many painters use transfer paper, carbon paper, etc. to quickly get their drawing onto the canvas. Honestly, drawing directly to the canvas can be messy, though I prefer it for myself because it’s easier for me to work with. It’s truly a matter of preference.

  13. I loved this tutorial! I love that you explained everything in detail for us beginner artists lol. I would love to see more tutorial for pets. BTW you puppies are gorgeous! I was hoping you would show us how to paint a dog who is mostly black.

  14. Fabulous, I was so trying to get the proportions of Gerry our sadly deceased cat right (from his photo) but couldn’t get it just so. This will be an enormous help, Thank you x

  15. I did this method with a classroom of children for a fundraiser to provide them with local funded arts supplies and lessons. I was so skeptical on how this would turn out, since I had never tried it before hand… The results were AMAZING! The kids said they wanted to try it with other pictures at home! Thank you for making this video!!
