How to train your dog without a clicker. This video goes over how you can use my video tutorials if you do not wish to use a clicker. Instead you can create another marker sound, or a marker word like "yes!".

This video goes over how you can use a marker word instead of using a clicker to train your dog. Even if you do use a clicker with your dog, it is a great idea to have a marker word that works in the same way as the clicker for when you want to train when you forgot your clicker or perhaps you need both of your hands for other reasons. I use a marker word very often to train new freestyle behaviors because either my hands need to be close to my dogs head or I am using both of them. Using a marker word for handling is also a great idea, as you will need one hand to hold the treats and the other hand to touch the dog with. Sigh, if only we had three hands!

  1. THIS IS THE VIDEO I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR!! Anymore on the positive training without the clicker would be great. I love your vids because you use all different dogs and more real life situations. Everyone can really see how this principle works! Thanks!!

  2. Great video Emily. I have a few clients that don’t like to use a clicker, and I have a few dogs who are afraid of it. Marker words are great for trainers too, especially when we accidently leave our clickers at home. Oops!

  3. Hi, your videos, presentation, brevity and just the graciousness you are sharing all of your knowledge is wonderful. Thank you sooooooooooo much. Can i ask you, were on your site can I find the best A-to-Z on training my dog to do ‘Freestyle’ moves (i.e., back up, spin, etc)? I paid to have someone help with it here in Asia but, was disappointmented. Asia just doesn’t have the expertise found in Europe or Northern America

  4. @imaiken1 Keep trying different things, you can also try getting your dog to target your hand instead of a target- and if you lay your hand over the other leg that is not supposed to cross, it can help the dog to know which paw to cross if the dog is confused

  5. Is it possible to use both a marker word and a clicker? Or would that be too confusing? For example, when going for a walk to a park and a clicker isn’t practical to bring, can I use the marker word as a replacement for public outings?

  6. Hey! Thank you so much for your videos! I was starting to get frustrated about training my puppy, but you make it much easier. I have one question: is “yes” just as good as the clicker as a reinforcement?
    🙂

  7. Despite the limited study done on a small sampling and the testimonials of some, I’m not convinced that a clicker is better than a well executed marker word. At least not for every single dog across the board. I’ve met some who do best with a clicker and others who do best with verbal. I try to let the animal decide what they respond best to, if I can.

    1. That’s a common misconception. A lot of professionals think of clicker training as a method, while the public still thinks it’s all about the tools used. Hopefully, some day dog professionals will get their jargon to be straight forward….

  8. Hi!
I really like the way you teach dog trainning to every one. I would like to have your opinion on a puppy that eats too fast. I don’t know what to do without reinforcing this behaviour or worst, causing food agression. I looked for a video about it but they seem amators, I respect more your expertise. I have many question about this such as do I have to let him eat because each time I come closer, he starts to swallow without even crunching it. It could be your next video! Thank you very much

  9. I’ve just discovered your channel via a reddit community and I’m so impressed by your content that I had to say “thank you”. Regards from Brazil.

    1. Oh Thanks! 🙂 I appreciate it. People have told me to do stuff on Reddit, but I want to concentrate on just Facebook and Youtube… so I don’t overwhelm myself 🙂

    2. Dog Training by Kikopup you’re right. Moreover, you do have a lot of spontaneous links in reddit. 🙂

Btw, one question: I’m usually affraid of using clicker (but I confess you’re changing my mind) for training my westie, mainly because I think (probably erroneously) he won’t get the spoken command later on. Do you have a hint here?

Once again, thank you for your wonderful channel.

    3. With the clicker, its just the same as saying “yes” or “good” after the dog does a behavior. Once the dog has learned the behavior, you then don’t have to tell the dog he did it right- he learns he is right by what you do next… for example you say Sit, your dog sits, then you say lets go, and you cross the road and then he gets to sniff the grass. Or perhaps you ask for another behavior… You can always acknowledge your dog did a good job, but I suggest using a different marker, not the one that is associated with the 1 to 1 ratio ( 1 click equals 1 treat)
