  1. This was amazingly timed 😂 got a puppy a few weeks back, just changed his food from dry to wet food and he grows at anyone that goes near him or his bowl now when he is eating . He definitely feels protective over this food .

  2. Punishing a dog for resource guarding doesn’t even make sense. The dog sees you approaching and gets nervous and growls. You punish the dog. The dog thinks “I was right!! The person approaches me and something bad happens! I knew I shouldn’t trust that person.” Human approach should always mean good things happen (that is NOT to say that if a dog is growling at you you should continue to approach the dog–you should not). But start dropping a high value treat (that the dog will go for) at a point where he isn’t growling. Move closer and closer (keeping the dog under threshold). If you’re in a hurry and want to rush (in other words, you have no intention of taking the time needed for the dog to associate an approaching human with good things), this won’t work. Don’t blame the procedure. Blame yourself. And don’t be surprised if resource guarding shows itself again at a later date.
