Loose Leash Walking Tips with dogs who are strong pullers

Loose Leash Walking Tips with dogs who are strong pullers. I made this video just to show that you can use the same leash walking tips (as my loose leash walking video with a chihuahua in it) with Dogs of all breeds and sizes. All dogs learn in the same way using positive reinforcement training.

  1. That’s uncanny. Bella looks exactly like my dog, Bowie, except Bowie has white patches on his feet. They also have their leash-pulling tendancies in common. Great video!!!

  2. Really helpful. Thanks for showing so many different dogs. Helps to see both what they are doing and then how you are responding. Thanks!

  3. @Tatelina Thanks! I know sometimes people forget, especially when they are late for work. Also joggers sometimes forget, because they don’t want to stop jogging for their dogs to explore. Everyone is in such a rush, if they would just slow down, and take it easy, their dogs wouldnt have as many behavioral issues most likely.

  4. @Makoce Same situation with my 2 yr old Border Collie. When she was pup, I brought her to so many places and dog runs events but on our first dog training class, she suddenly turned aggressive out of fearfulness. It was a horribly traumatic day for me and since then I’ve had so many injuries. =( It took 8 months of training for her to get along with people. It’s difficult for me to progress on the next step with dogs since I live in a city and around where I live, people avoid us. *sighs*

  5. thanks for the tips. It’s very helpful to see you work with dogs that are still learning like you have done in this vid. How do you feel about using a long retractable leash and letting the dog have lots of room before it gets tight?

  6. i LOVE the fact that you are showing us these techniques on untrained dogs! You are the only trainer I’ve found here on youtube who does that. Kudos!
Thank you so much for posting these videos. You are a lifesaver! 😀

  7. There is a decided lack of assistance on youtube for training two dogs at once. You are one of the best trainers on youtube- would love if you would fill this void Kikopup! Many people don’t have the time to train multiple dogs separately and its easy to focus on one dog and miss something that the other dog is doing.

    Again, love your vids…thanks!

  8. I think you are WONDERFUL! I wish you would come out with a video, or a book, so more people will start using positive reinforcement techniques! Thank you!

  9. I love your videos! Thanks alot for making them! Is there anyway to demonstrate with a dog that is great with no distraction but when you get outdoors, the dog is much more distracted and pulls more? (As my aussie does 🙂 She is a great dog but has a hard time with other dogs and people, just gets very excited and pulls…Keep making videos! You time is worth it….

  10. Awesome video, thank you! I’ve been struggling with my little pound mutt for months and haven’t been able to get her to walk loosely on the lead – I actually think we’ll be able to do it your way! She’s a smart dog and I’ve been able to teach her heaps of other stuff… just have to get this lead thing knocked over. 🙂

  11. This is very helpful for me. I have a rescue dog who is not socialized at all, and I’m not a good dog trainer. So I have a lot to learn. Walking her is an ordeal. Like the dog in this video, a lot of the time she doesn’t want the food and is too excited/distracted for me to get her attention. But I feel like this is doable. Got a clicker yesterday.

  12. This has been very helpful to me. My dog pulls on a leash and lunges into people’s front yards whenever she smells something interesting, but after only two days of this training I have noticed a significant improvement with her leash manners. For those who are having trouble: if your dog isn’t willingly focusing on you, you are in a too high distraction area, plain and simple. Start off with this exercise inside, and then when your dog has mastered that, progress to the yard, then on your driveway, then maybe a quiet street. The dog has to have a really solid foundation of focusing on you before it can do it in a high distraction area. At the beginning you will be feeding pretty much a constant stream of treats into the dog’s mouth when they are in the correct position, but after a while you can cut down to a few each minute. Also don’t expect to get anywhere on your first few walks because you will have to either stop or turn around every few seconds.

  13. Thanks for this. I came into “roommates” with a very, VERY large puppy. He’s pit/st.bernard/mastiff and while he sits ok (still working on that) he doesn’t like the leash. He was dumped just off of Rt 66 and that’s how we got him. He’s about 4 months and over 50 pounds. So I’ll try this. (If you want to see pictures there are a couple on my google.

  14. I’m feeling so much more at ease watching your videos for leash training my two dogs. Your methods are calm and respectful of the dog, wich is something I really appreciate! Thank you for such a great channel. If you’re ever in the Boston area and want to film footage of helping my boyfriend and I to better train our two fur babes, let me know! 🙂

  15. I’ve been doing this for a while! Now all I have to do is to start turning my body and “pretend” that I’m going to turn around. He anticipates my turning around and slows down to catch up before he reaches the end of the leash, then I cancel my turn and keep walking forwards. I did it for 3 days now, and he has almost given up trying to walk ahead of me! :)))

  16. Work with six GS’s and you are teaching me so very, very much! Thank you! Positive Reinforcement is the only way! And please, keep pouring out the knowledge Ma’am!
