Teach your puppy his name

A puppy training tutorial on how to teach your puppy his name.

I suggest your dog’s name should mean to give you attention but not necessarily come toward you. So you can say your dog’s name to get their attention if they are distracted with something, then tell them what you want them to do. For example “Fluffy, leave it” or “Fluffy, come”. You don’t need to say your dog’s name before you ask your dog to do something if you already have their attention though. And as you can imagine it can get quite repetitive.

IF your puppy or dog doesn’t look at you when you say his name after training, it tells you something. That he is too distracted, you haven’t conditioned the name enough, you haven’t proofed it enough, the dog is stressed or the reinforcement isn’t of high enough value. Do not keep repeating your dog’s name if he doesn’t look at you. Instead try to move to a less distracting environment.

Can you change your dog’s name? Yes. It is very simple to change a dog’s name. Most likely you will call your dog many nicknames as you might with close friends and family members. My dogs all have quite a few names they respond to. Splash is also called Bubu and Tug is called many names including Mr. Snuffles.

If you have adopted a dog with an unknown history, and you are worried their name was paired with punishment more than positive experiences, for example, “FLUFFY! NO!”, “BAD FLUFFY” or “Fluffy you get here RIGHT NOW! Or else.” I suggest to change the name to something that sounds completely different. This is not confusing for the dog, in the same way it’s not confusing if your mom calls you one name, but your best friend or partner calls you another name.

  1. We always had a only-dog but now we have a child and we call him (“come”) and our dog runs to us. Which is funny, cause when I only call my dog, she doesn’t come. This puppy is so cute!

  2. Dogs & people are benefiting worldwide from your excellent channel. Your excellent easy to follow tutorials, commitment, dedication & enthusiasm helps so many. Without you I & many others would not have the understanding & bond with our dogs. Love what you do. Thank you so much.

  3. Excellent! You have an impressive canine collection. They are all so lovely in their own ways. I do have a particular soft spot for Tug …

  4. My dog is four and still responds to “puppy” lol. She responds to her name but if she’s distracted she responds better to puppy.

    1. Awe 🙂 I hear my neighbor call his dogs name then after a few times he yells “COOKIES!” haha. And then his dog comes.

    2. @Dog Training by Kikopup 😂😂😂😂 my dog’s recall is fantastic with “puppy”. My previous dog I ruined his “leave it” so I started using “weiners”. That worked great unless we were in public lol.

  5. Nice video as always, Halo is very cute, he is angelic with that look he gives. Lots of prayers and blessings and keep sharing = caring, I refer many back to your videos and your style of teaching. 0:)

    1. Thanks yes, I waited a few weeks to give him the name, but he is very angelic… Little guy can do no wrong. Not looking for conflict, sweet with my dogs, sweet with people. He is a little soft and sensitive, but his personality is angelic.

  6. Our rescue pup was with a foster family and they named him Felix, so when we got him he knew the name they gave him already! We decided to keep it. He knows his name is “Felix” or “Pup”. He answers to both! hahaha

  7. Thank you. I have been working on this recently and this gives me more ideas. My little guy is at a stage of being very curious and on my property he will take a detour to check out a new corner he hasn’t seen. It’s time for lots of recall work! 🙂

  8. I always enjoy your videos. I was in Walmart today and a young couple had a tiny chihuahua, 6 weeks old. I talked with them a bit and asked if they thought they might need some training tips. They said yes. I had a small writing tablet, so I wrote down your channel’s name, as well as Pam’s. I told them they ought to be able to find out most anything they need, and that you just happen to have a new puppy and are giving puppy training tutorials! Thank you again for all you share and teach. <3 Ann

  9. Lovely and useful videos. I just got my borador four days ago, and followed your videos to train him, he understands his name already. He also sits nicely to wait for his meals. Thank you so much!!!! Xx

  10. A neighbor of mine had 3 Aussies named Journey, Quest, and Story. All different coat colors and amazing dogs. We will be getting our mini Aussie soon and we’re trying to decide on a name for him.

  11. Thank you so much. This video was sooo helpful ❤️❤️❤️. No other videos explained what to do if your puppy doesn’t look at you.

  12. How long does it take for your puppy to learn their name? We’ve been practicing 2-3 times a day with my puppy for about 3 days and she doesn’t seem to get it. She has learned “potty” but we don’t think she is getting her name. She still doesn’t respond to it.

  13. This is easily the best video on name training that I’ve ever seen! And the only one that shows how to use it with multiple dogs! My two used to get really confused and both respond no matter who I actually called, now I can work on them knowing their names individually and not just coming to my voice!
