The Calm Settle – for dogs and puppies

This video is on the topic of teaching your dog to calmly settle and relax either on a verbal cue or a situational cue, for example if you sit in a chair at a cafe or you stand and talk to your neighbor.

This video explains why teaching the calm settle is beneficial for you and your dog. It is the number one exercise I work on with all my clients.

    1. Its funny, when I sighed in the video at the end when talking about blinking and sighing for your dog, it then actually made me sigh watching the video. Maybe I should make a recording for a sleeping app lol.

  1. I’m getting a samoyed puppy in December and have been binge watching all of your videos as they’re so incredibly helpful! Super nervous and excited but hopefully I’ll be prepared enough in a few months!

    1. Oh Congrats! I find them one of the most beautiful breeds. All dogs are different of course but I find most that I meet sweet gentle and funny, just great personalities and so intelligent. Don’t be nervous you will do great πŸ™‚

  2. Thanks for posting another superb tutorial. Your explanation on counterintuitive was perfect as always. It’s always helpful to remember when we understand why something is so.
Thanks so much for creating such an awesome channel. Your dedication, commitment, amazingly fantastical approach & teaching is very much appreciated. As always loving all what you do. Thank you very much.

  3. Thank you so much Emily for once again putting into words concepts I’ve been straggling to myself! especially when explaining to clients and other less experienced dog people πŸ₯°

    1. Its a really hard concept to explain… Its also a really boring exercise to get some clients interested in wanting to do…

  4. This video presented difficult training in such a beginner friendly manner, so informative and educational! really enjoyed it, thank you for the great work!

    1. Awe thanks! I struggled with this video. Its a hard topic. I realize now I left out a couple tips that can help, like holding the treats in your hand so you dont have to rifle in the bait bag every time.

  5. Thanks so much for this. We made the mistake of starting with trick training with our puppy in the first month, and quickly realized how fast a situation can escalate when he gets frustrated and we get a full blown tantrum or the zoomies. Tried rewarding him just for settling down yesterday and it was such a good improvement. He calmed down much faster anytime he started getting overexcited or nippy and settled down with us. Discovered your channel from Dr. Pawfessor, and I’m so glad. Will definitely recommend you to newbie puppy owners (like me!) πŸ™‚

    1. Oh yay! Also sometimes the arousal and frustration is part of their personality, so they need calming down, while there are actually some super mellow puppies that you actually have to excite to get them interested in the food and training.

  6. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of dog training videos on Youtube and just as many trainers; I criticize none in simply saying that I like Kickopup very much. The presentation is not aggressive; it’s informed, direct and her knowledge works. The emphasis is on the dog and the technique, not the trainer.

    1. Thanks very much. I think we learn best when given a choice too. I do have to say though that my videos might not be as entertainment oriented as much as other channels. I figure the people who need the information want to hear it not be entertained, and if someone wants entertainment there are lots of other options on youtube. That said I try to make my videos so they are not too long winded… And I have learned a lot over the years. But I continue to learn.

    2. @Dog Training by Kikopup actually, your videos are very entertaining in the sense that we see the training and lifestyle of your dogs. Also your home is well decorated so you’re a bit like a lifestyle vlogger in that sense

    3. @Dog Training by Kikopup You are the best. I dont want to be entertained and watch more about the overly excitable trainers than the actual dogs! I need to know how to effectively help my dog. Your videos are so informative and easy to follow but best of all short which means I can remember and apply the steps you are teaching. You are brilliant exactly as you are. Please dont ever change. Thank you so much for all that you do. I’m delighted with the great results.

    4. @Dog Training by Kikopup very much appreciate the no-nonsense approach. Whenever I’m looking for a new skill I check for your content first because I know you’ll get right to the point and J won’t have to skip through corny jokes/ad reads/etc… Not to mention I’ve had success with your techniques. Keep up the good work.

  7. This 100% explains “problems” I’ve been having with my pups (9 year old assistance dog, 3 year old pet dog)! So glad I’m seeing this video before I get my assistance dog prospect puppy. Thank you so much too for having closed captions!

  8. I wish I’d found you 6 years ago when I rescued my dog! Now that I’ve moved from the country to the city, I’m trying to go back in time and correct behaviors. Thank you for sharing your knowledge! Fingers crossed that my old dog can learn this new ‘trick.’ πŸ™‚

  9. Emily, you are amazing! I love your videos, you are a true professional. I love how genuine you are, without all that fake enthusiasm that drives me crazy. Amazing info, positive reinforcement at its best. You respect the dogs. I’ve been watching ALL of your videos.

  10. Thank you. My GSP puppy, who’s nearly always ‘on’, picked this up really quickly. Just started yesterday and he already seems to be taking the opportunity to relax more outside of his crate! Thank you

  11. What a great video! You are so informative and have great attention to detail by saying little tips/pointers that other trainers ignore or fail to mention so that when average Joe like me attempts it I’m left thinking β€˜what do I do in this situation!?’
I haven’t tried it yet but I think you’ve prepped me for how it may go and what to do. I logged in just to write this comment and give it a thumbs up! Can’t wait to go through all your other videos!

  12. My dog isn’t hyped and frustrated about food, but he IS overall pretty busy! He allll the time is very overly focused on what I’m doing at any given moment and is quick to bounce right up if I stand up or do much of anything. Definitely am going to be using capturing for as long as it takes for him to be able to be in a calmer state more often πŸ™‚

  13. i started training my puppy like this today and he’s already acting so much calmer. just last night i was breaking down because he would just never listen and was always too stimulated. i was really losing hope in training him by myself, so i’m so grateful for this video

    1. adding onto this because we just practiced this at the end of the same day – this video absolutely changed his demeanor and made him so much naturally calmer. he barely wants to get up now lol i’ll have to teach him how to come on command soon

  14. I’ve just started this with my 15 week old Aussie! It was much needed πŸ™ thank you! We are making some progress over the last 3 days but how long would you expect it to take for this to be reliably learned?

  15. Thank you so much for these videos!! I have effectively trained my 6 & 9 month old border collie crosses how to settle using your techniques. I’ve got one falling asleep at my feet in the 4th session, and the other one is asleep a couple of metres away in the same room. I crate trained them which has been amazing but when I started taking the 6 month old to therapy dog training classes I realised she doesn’t settle in public very well. I’ve been wondering if it’s even possible at all and here she is sleeping at my feet right now.
