This trick takes some time. I would keep lessons short and fun 2-3 minutes. You might spend a couple of lessons on each step. I spent about 3 days getting Splash to just enjoy targeting back and forth between the chairs.

Once your dog has got it move the trick to a new area to practice in. Otherwise you might have a dog that can only shake their head indoors near the piano.

If your dog looks clueless in the new location, go back a step. So if you have movable targets (like chairs) bring them to the new location, to give the dog a hint.

If you or your dog get frustrated, just go back a step.

I particularly liked the foot movement when Splash shakes her head. You could also get some freestyle moves out of this trick, for instance teaching the dog to take 2 steps to the left and then 2 steps to the right etc.

You could teach Nodding Yes with the same method, but with the targets above and below the dog.

  1. Oh and just a tip for some having issues, Crash kept backing up so I sat him with his back against the wall and just moved the post its further out from him instead of back. It helped him a lot, you just don’t get as much extension in the neck or the paw lifts. But maybe that will help some that are having issues.

    Great video!!

  2. Sorry for those who are out of town etc. There is a new twist! IF you post your dog doing this trick in the next two weeks there will be a prize for that as well!!! (not as cool, but still, if you can get your dog to shake their head in two weeks its worth SOMETHING!) Stay tuned for what the Runner up prizes might be!!!!

  3. You and Crash are winners so far! Just one spot left. Hopefully people wont mind if I check in the morning! That will keep the suspense going!

  4. I know Storm can do it! I was surprised there are 2 winners now. No worries, there will be another contest soon in the future, AND there is a new runner up prize to be announced tomorrow, for ANY dog that can get this trick in 2 weeks.

  5. Emily this video is great! Thanks for posting it! I actually used a post-it to teach cross paws following the advice on your video. I can see how a post-it can be useful for lots of tricks. Right now I am teaching Ricky to hide his head under a blanket with a post-it. I will start working on “no” today!

  6. I’m quite excited by this Emily. We’ve just mastered Handstand and the next trick I wanted to do was just this one but I wasn’t 100% sure where to start. So thanks, count me in – that’s me being optimistic!

  8. Just started teaching my dog this trick but I’m using both my hands with treats in it as the targets. It’s a bit difficult so I will try this method since she already knows the target trick. Thanks!

I would looove to see another contest coming up!

  10. Hahahah I love the sabotage! Very cute. 🙂

I can’t wait to get to this level of clicker training… I’ve only just started charging the clicker with one dog..and the other is just starting to get ‘target’.

    Looking forward to more vids!
