*Exactly* How Much Exercise Should I Give My Dog Every Day?? #dogtraining #dogtrainer #puppytraining

In this video, we discuss the controversial topic of whether it's bad to exercise high-energy dogs and address some common arguments presented by balanced dog trainers. We explore the belief that relying on exercise to manage a dog's mental and physical state can lead to an unsustainable situation and potential adverse effects on the dog's well-being. We also delve into the prevalent attitudes in certain dog training cultures that emphasize strict control over dogs and challenge the notion that dogs need to be strictly controlled to achieve calmness.

We advocate for a more compassionate and empathetic approach towards training, focusing on the importance of physical and mental stimulation for a dog's well-being. Exercise not only promotes the release of brain chemicals such as endorphins, serotonin, dopamine, and oxytocin, but it also contributes to a longer, healthier life by maintaining a healthy weight, strengthening bones, joints, and muscles, and reducing the risk of diseases and health problems.

Furthermore, we highlight the significance of exercise and play as bonding opportunities, creating a strong relationship between dogs and their owners that makes training and communication more effective. We acknowledge the individual differences in dogs, emphasizing the need for tailored exercise routines and the importance of providing physical and mental outlets for high-energy dogs to encourage natural behavior in acceptable ways.

While recognizing the need for moderation in exercise to prevent over-exercising and ensure adequate rest and recovery time, we also discuss the additional benefits of exercise, such as decreasing boredom and destructive behavior, building confidence, improving socialization, and enhancing mental and problem-solving skills. Join us in this informative and thought-provoking discussion to better understand the role of exercise in a dog's life and how it impacts their overall well-being and training success.

  1. I think the answer to this depends on a dog’s breed. Some breeds may require much more than other breeds. I’ve had mostly “couch potatoes” who don’t require a great deal of exercise (although some of my Danes and Wolfhounds did help me train for marathons). My little dogs now are usually fine with 45 minutes or so of physical exercise 5 days per week. We use both walks and playing in a fenced yard to get all 45 minutes in.

  2. I have a Jack Russell and he usually does 2 or 3 walks a day. He has a lunchtime walk for around 30 mins and then his main walk is usually at about 4 or 5pm and he goes for 1-3 hours or more sometimes. If he doesn’t go he pesters me until I cave. Man’s a skinny legend.

  3. our dalmatian isn’t content unless he gets 3x one hour outings a day with one of those being a run around at the park chasing the ball, if he doesnt get this he gets pretty vocal and will dig in the garden or hump his bed in protest

  4. My younger dog gets about an hour a day walk (fast paced) as well as fetch in the garden, training sessions once or twice a day, and sometimes puzzle treats. My older dog gets a 15 min slow walk twice a week (that’s all he can do, he’s old and has cancer so his walks are for his mental well being rather than physical) as well as puzzle treats and fetch if he feels up to it. I probably wouldn’t leave my home if I didn’t have dogs to walk haha ❤

  5. I try exercising my dogs, the best of my abilities

I’m only a kid, and can’t take my dog anywhere until he’s fixed
But I try playing with him, at least 10 to 30 minutes a day
    With training mix in there

But he gets to play with his doggy friend daily, so that helps

But it’s the first dog I ever had, that has high energy like him

  6. My dog takes me on a walk daily. Minimum 1.5 miles, but sometimes he gets a wild hair and we put 3 miles under our paws. He’s a good boy.

  7. My husband takes our standard golden doodle on two walks a day of about 20 to 30 minutes each. At least once a week we like to take him shopping. He gets so excited when we say we are going shopping(he’ll even run inside from squirrel patrol)! I’m not sure if it’s going to new places with new smells, or meeting new people that he likes so much!

  8. According to my dog it’s a 3hour walk (daily), with about an hour playing.
    Or a 4-5 hour walk.
If i don’t do this, he won’t wanna come inside.
He also needs about 15minutes of sitting infront of our home before he wanna go inside.

  9. I have a border collie, and I take him out twice a day, every single day. Each time we’re out for at least 30 minutes. He has dog friends who he runs around with a lot a few of those days. I guess on average, he gets an hour and a half per day, if we average it all out. He could do a LOT more than that – and he sure wants to – but he’s super well-behaved for 2 reasons: 1) I learned a lot from watching YOUR channel, and 2) he gets enough exercise.

  10. One factor not often mentioned is whether the dog has a yard to be let out in to potty and run around. We don’t have one so clearly we walk and jog a lot. We have outdoor space but not potty space and plenty of indoor space for fetch but on average we do 5 miles a day, and trips to open field areas a few times a week and play dates with friends. We go hiking. But she doesn’t have a fenced in yard to randomly run around in and she is a super high energy mostly Foxhound Australian Shepherd mutt, not a Shih Tzu. There is blanket answer. 🤷🏻‍♀️

  11. I have a Shiba Inu. We go for two 30-60 min walks a day and he gets to play and run with my neighbors dog a few times a week. I’ve noticed that he doesn’t need hour long walks at all. 30 minutes twice a day is easily enough. But he loooves running and playing with other dogs so I try and incorporate that weekly.
