How Long Should You Train Your Dog?

This video goes over important factors to take into account when deciding how long training sessions should be with your puppy or adult dog. The content is presented as I would to professional trainers but it also understandable to those who have little or no experience in dog training yet (who are just beginning their exciting journey in learning about dog training).

  1. I am THRILLED you’re making more videos lately.

Your content has always been educational and presented in a really informative and non-intimidating way. I feel like I’m getting spoiled with there being so many new videos lately XD

  2. Thanks for your explanation.
I find your list of factors very helpful.
The ‘shout out’ isn’t bothering me at all.
I like everyone who support your work.

  3. 3:12 awesome to hear about the personal approach for each dog! My terrier is the same – short sessions confuse her and she wants more, more, more! 😀 Saluki on the other hand – 2 or 3 repetitions and thank you, we are done here.

  4. Great video as always. Especially appreciate your detailed and thoughtful guidance about basic training as well as regarding good practices for different canine personalities and levels of fitness.

  5. Hello Emily! Would it be possible for you to enable subtitle contributions in your videos? I’d love to translate your videos and provide brazilian portuguese subtitles so I can share your amazing videos with people I know (and need them!) As Always, very informative and well explained video <3 Thank you so much for putting out such incredible free content out

    1. Give me about 10 mins I will add auto generated captions.. I had planned to add them as I publish the videos. But I forgot lol

  6. This is my first video from you! Thank you so much, this was really helpful for my 12 week old puppy who I just got last Monday. Can’t wait to see your other videos!

  7. So greatful for your videos! I so respect the way you regard the needs of your dogs and your knowledge! Thanks for making it available to more owners and thereby improving the lives of so many dogs! Keep up the good work!

  8. When I was still training my dog to come when called, I always skipped her breakfast and feed her a little bit more at luch so I could do a “come” training session when she was really really interested in food. Now she’s kind of always interested in food, I think now she finds it more reinforcing than most environments, unlike when she was younger

  9. I’m just about to get a new puppy (blue heeler/mini Aussie mix) and so excited I found your channel! I can’t wait to start training her!!!

  10. Wow, fantastic advice! I’m thrilled to have just found your channel now that I have a new puppy coming home, she is 4 weeks so 4 more weeks until I get her and excited to try all your advice. Binging on your videos. Subscribed, hope you continue posting more, Thank you I really appreciate your hard work!

  11. Hi, I’ve just discovered your channel and I’m really glad I did. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I will definitely be a better dog mom thanks to your invaluable tips.

  12. a general daily routine would be interesting too. its kind of hard to ignore the dog in between walks and playing. i try to play with my dog three times a day where i feed the kibble portion for the day, so its no food out of the bowl at all. the hardest thing is to ignore my dog between activities because it is hard for her to just lay down and sleep, she gets up all the time although your calm settle helped her a little bit. the trainer told me: “you have no dog in between activities” but i cant really ignore her because shes so active all the time.

    1. If you think shes not sleeping enough, you coudl have a couple hours where you put her in a pen in a room with the door closed and music on, so she has time where shes not watching you and can get some rest.

    2. @Dog Training by Kikopup thanks. The Problem with her is that she has almost no Frustration tolerance and i fear that might be contraproductive for her( i work with her alot though, we had like five different Trainers and im half dog Trainer right now). I rescued her from a breeder who doesnt know what the hell hes doing and only selects for the most aggressive and hyperactive dogs. He usually breeds parson terriers for hunting (theyre “Single Use” articles for him as they are often dead or badly wounded as soon as they Hit two years of age). So my little girl is a different Kind of animal. Shes really smart and loves play and Training but I struggle terribly to help her find some peace of mind and solve her reactivity and Frustration issues. The Trainers sadly didnt really help, the last one suggested medicating her even though she is healthy.

  13. That rings a bell about your terrier wanting longer sessions, that’s how my Ursila was bc she would get so excited! I’ve said I before and once again your training methods are a life saver! Good news, we are planning for a new puppy! Thanks for all the updated videos, I’m a long time fan! 😀😀😊

  14. Hey I’ve got a question- how often do you have to practice a behavior to maintain it? Ideally most behaviors we practice every day but some, like scent detection or item identification, can’t be practiced as often.

  15. I am in the UK and I really have learnt a lot from your videos. Please keep them coming. Do let me know if you do virtual training sessions.

  16. I’ll be picking up my puppy in less than two weeks, so I’m rewatching the puppy playlist to refresh my memory. And I have to say your videos are extremely helpful, especially all the info on how to adjust the training for different personality of puppies! I also love how short and to the point you make your videos, it makes it easier for me to digest the info. 😊 I’m extremely grateful for your work! 🐩
