How to train a dog that is over excited over food

This is my dog training tip of the day. How to build calmness in your dog using their meal.

If you think in the terms that you are training your dog 100% of the time, every reinforcement you give your dog or the environment gives your dog, is building some behavior or emotional state. What behavior and emotional state are you building every time you put your dogs food bowl down. Are you building calmness or are you building arousal?

You have to feed your dog every day, you might as well capture the behaviors you like and use that meal to its fullest to create a happy calm and well adjusted companion.

This tip should get you thinking about other times you reward arousal in your dog without thinking about it.

Coming up on Dogmantics will be an episode on Pit Bulls as well as an episode on how to get your dog to stop barking!

  1. 5*! Another excellent video with great information. While this may seem like common sense to most clicker trainers, this information isn’t always common knowledge. I agree, the dog should be praised for calm behavior not spinning like crazy and barking for the meal.

    Happy Clicking!

  2. Thank you so much for this video! I hope that more people watch this video and begin to change their behavior and in turn change their dog’s behavior too!

  3. Yes, I agree with bluevspink, although I absolutely love your videos, I think it would be nice if you could give us a smile once in a while. I’m sure you are not always so serious:) you’ve got to be a fun person if you love dogs so much;)) I know your dogs see another side of you that we don’t. Anyway keep your videos coming smile or no smile:))

  4. This video immediately brought to mind my Parson Russell Forrest’s regular mealtime ritual that he’s been doing for years. So, I videotaped it tonight at dinner time, and have posted it as a video response.

I agree that mealtime is a fantastic opportunity to train and condition our dogs. It’s a shame to waste such a fantastic, regular opportunity.

Thanks for this video, which has also reminded me to look for training and opportunities in other areas of our everyday lives!

    Keep ’em coming!

  5. Yes! That video response was cool! It definitely shows you can teach impulse control! Wow forrest’s backing up is quite amazing!

I have also used mealtime conversely to build interest in food for dogs that are not food motivated. Playing ready streaddyyy goo! also for old dogs who have no appetite.

  6. Fantástico como siempre… un tip no solo superinteresante, sino “fundamental” e “imprescindible”.
    Muchas gracias :))
    Un fuerte abrazo Emily

  7. This makes sooo much sense. My furry ones are so food motivated that there is an intense level of excitement at mealtime, especially the pup. Will do the prep an hour ahead and wait for calm. Thank you so much for all your help in Dogmantics!

  8. You could build calmness to the degree that you want. I for example, have dogs that are calm enough around food, so I can work on complex tricks without them just staring at the food, or spinning and jumping. But not too calm that they are not motivated enough to do high energy tricks. I actually myself will do exercises to build arousal on food with my dogs. There are owners who will want to build calmness and others who will want to build arousal… depending on how the dog is at this point

  9. i have watched every single video you have here… all in one day!!! i love the method you use, i love the relationship you have with your beautiful pups, you are amazing!!! my 10 month old yorkie/poodle mix has been clicker training for a month, and just today rambo learned 2 new ones. crossing his paws and weaving through my legs!!! you are fantastic. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!

  10. Today I got mad at my dog and hit him. I got so mad at myself I couldn’t believe I did that. A while later I came on YouTube to look up tips for training and came across your videos. I just wanted to say thanks for all your advice, I can tell its really going to help me and my dog.

  11. My dog has learnt almost by herself to sit while I’m putting kebbles in her bowl : it just took one meal to teach her that : the second she got exited, I stepped back from the counter and the food. Now I try to keep her sitting longer and longer as I lower the bowl down to the floor, and she breaks the sit when the bowl is about one foot from the floor.   ////   AND we train Leave it regularly, to this date I click after 15 seconds approx.  She barks for a few 5 seconds, then stops as I never reinforce when she barks, I wait until she has really stopped barking and given me eye contact to click. ///    BUT : she is still extremely aroused by food on training cessions, and this is making things very difficult . I Should probably alternate with lower value food. What do you think ? Thank you Emily.

  12. Thank you. This makes so much sense! Your video gave me such a hope for relief. My dog was adopted at 1.5 yo she is now 12 yo – she came to us with this behavior. I wish I would have come across this information sooner. It would have save me YEARS of irritation (I am not a morning person so when she is yelling, screaming, barking, and demanding at me when I am doing everything I can to hurry up and give her the food so she will shut up – it is not a great way for me to start my day!)
    Thanks again.

  13. I love your approach & I’m definitely subscribing thank you, I’m trying that out. I just got a new puppy and she jumps and barks at food time & it’s so bad that all you have to do is enter the kitchen and she goes nuts LOL. When I tell her to sit she was barking so I put the food down and came back 5 minutes later and asked her to sit and ta da different dog. I was already ignoring her in the kitchen going about my business but when I left the kitchen this time, it worked. She’s such a good dog, she’s learning fast but that one I was having trouble with.
