How to train a settle

This video shows how to train your dog to settle (lay down at your feet) whenever you have her on leash and are ignoring her. Great for cafes and when you stop to chat to someone on a walk, etc.

Using clicker training and reward training you never need to punish or nag your dog. And you will have a dog that not only WANTS to do what you want them to do, but does it without you even asking!

The basis of this wonderful training method was taught to me by my dear friend Kyle.

  1. There is a clicker game to stop that, write me and Ill tell you (long description).
What you can do is use management- so get a chain leash for training the settle, or put some wintergreen oil (it tastes like peppermint and dogs don’t really like it)on it so you wont have to worry about the dog biting the leash while you ignore them. Never put bad tasting stuff in their mouth on perpous, but if the leash smells and is not so fun to grab then they will learn on their own not to mouth it.

  2. 5 STARS as usual for another pawsome video:). Great job Splash! and I am really glad you showed the “settle” in real life, distracting situations. What was Kiko doing that was so interesting off screen?

  3. Hehe, Kiko finds laying in the sun on the couch more reinforcing, rather than hanging around during her owner chit chatting to a camera. 🙂 If only I could bottle sunlight! Ha! did you make up the word ‘pawsome’? That made me laugh!

  4. Thank you so much for taking the time to share this! I love all your incredibly inspiring videos, you have a great way of communicating how to go about things. Your tips are also very very helpful! Your videos are definitely helping me become a better clicker trainer! 😀

  5. Hi! I hope I’m not bambarding you with comments lol I just discovered your videos today so have so many backed up questions 🙂 So if I am training my pup loose leash manners and also what you are showing on this video to stay, is my 4ft leash long enough? The leash keeps getting tight when I’m walking with him because he pulls and in your other video you say not to have tight leash.

  6. definitely i will do that to train my dog.i just saw your video just now and i immediately subscribe to your channel. more power to you and thanks a lot.

  7. I love all your videos! Thanks you so much for sharing! In a few weeks I’m getting a golden retriever/boxer mix and I’m so excited to bond with her over these wonderful behaviors!!

  8. your dogs are amazing …. unfortunately here in Guam they hardly allow dogs to go anywhere unlike in mainland US where they are allowed in cafes and some hotels … some malls *sigh

  9. Hi Emily, Thanks so much for your videos. I’ve just rescued a second Border Collie last week and was really confused as to how to work with the new one while the old dog was around. Your videos have been a great help and the old dogs learning new tricks too

  10. This is very helpful, thank you. I’m currently training my service dog and this is a big one as I’ll be going into cafes and restaurants a lot.

  11. Thank you!!! My dog has gone from a D- to a C+ in just a few days. I’m so happy with the progress we’ve made and to see how much he responds to just a little bit of helpful redirection.

  12. Hi, I am a big fun of your method. I have been learning your training methods intensively these 2 days (I am new) as I have a 3.5 month old puppy who has been with us for 1 month. I tried this with my pup because she has a tendency to become over excited state during walk pretty quickly. However, when I put her a harness and leash, she went to the door excitedly as if saying let’s go mom! so what can I do to avoid this situation? I tried to do it again after walking, just leaving harness and leash but she didn’t settle so I took it off before doing this exercise eventually. should I try to do this exercise when she is calm and sleepy?also, is it OK to put on leash and harness in home for certain period in a day? I think you said it was not good to put on dogs on leash inside home.

    1. You could go for a walk in the leash and harness and then when return work on the settle. So shes not confused and frustrated. You could also put her on a leash and harness and then do some training games inside so she doesnt get used to the leash and harness meaning always walk. Yes I meant that tying your dog to you, which is a method some trainers use can have the side effects of the dog not learning how to be loose in the house or learn to move properly etc.

  13. What a great video! So from what I am understanding, you don’t actually teach the dog how to lay down, just reward it when they do it? Also, would you give a command to this behaviour, like “settle” so they can do it when we ask them, like during dinner time when we are eating and he keeps sitting up and waiting for food?
