  1. Very useful. My dog, Piper, doesn’t bark. I think it’s great, although she’s very quiet; she talks with her eyes and her facial expressions.

  2. Hah! Kiko’s barking set Jedi off!! He’s a watchdog by breed (we don’t discourage his watch dog instincts though – we just taught him a quiet cue).

    Great video!

  3. Very cool tutorial. Barking is usually an upsetting behavior that often results in the human barking back, only worsening the ordeal. Thanks for a much more thoughtful sequence. Kiko is so darn cute. . . love that pup.

  4. GREAT tutorial! This is an excellent resource for any dog with an obsession.
Reminds me of my GSD pup. He is a bit fear reactive and that mixed with his high prey drive caused him to go crazy whenever a dog would run past us in obedience class. I found that I could prevent the behavior by 1) luring him under my chair (his den) where he felt more secure 2) start him doing nose touches to my hand before the dogs begins. Now (after several month) he doesn’t even notice the dogs during recall.

  5. Great video. This looks really promising. I hope you do a video on anxiety/attention barking. Just rescued a 6 week old puppy who won’t stop barking for attention….

  6. This is a great video. We have a Chihuahua who is barking as our landlord goes up the back staircase with his dog (so the sound of the person walking up the stairs AND the jingling of the dog’s leash trigger the barking). I ave started the training described her as well as “white noise” while we are out. Thanks for the great video.
We look forward to Episode 2 – as our Chihuahua is also barking at other dogs and would like help with that.

  7. Yes, reward the pup for quiet. Also other tips: have the crate in your bed room, make sure the pup has been out before bed, if the pup is under 12 weeks or longer, set an alarm and let the pup out to the bathroom before he thinks to whine. Tire the pup out just before bed. Build the crate as the BEST place to be with training games. Leave the pup in a puppy safe area, or pen when at work. It can be unfair for a puppy to stay in a crate when an owner is at work AND at night.Hope that helps

  8. I’ve been using the clicker training ideas from your other video for getting my dogs to look at me with the word “look”. It works absolutely great! Thanks so much for your video.

  9. super video showing desensitization. It’s also great to hear the explanation of “over threshold” while showing what that means. When you can control the stimulus this kind of training is quite easy and relatively quick as long as you watch for this exact thing. It a great example of how this works for so manner reactive causes. So much more effective than yelling, rolling, leash popping, all the rest of old methods, that suppress behaviors instead of actually changing the root emotion involved.

  10. I love your videos! I train dogs as well, and I think that you manage to show beginners a nice, simple way to work with their pets that doesn’t involve shouting, pain, or any other kind of negative reinforcement. One thing I’d like to make a note of: My dog reacts negatively to the sound of the clicker, so rather than use a click when she successfully completes a new trick or command, we use the word “Good!” and are meanwhile helping her learn not to be afraid of clickers, slamming doors, etc.

  11. Great post on training dogs not to bark! I use these techniques as well and they do work. My boxer was a challenge for a while but with positive reinforcement and daily consistency I was able to eliminate his obnoxious barking. He will bark when someone drives in the driveway which is what I would prefer to let me know someone is here, but he will stop when I ask him to. ~Jeremy

  12. This and the other 2 episodes on barking were very helpful. We live on our sailboat and our Schipperke has recently started barking at everyone who passes by or at other boaters doing work on their decks. I can’t wait to implement the steps presented in these videos.

  13. This is a great example of how to train a dog to “ignore” a sound they don’t like. Distraction is key. I love the list of directions at the end. Well done.

  14. I love how this is a great example of how to counter condition your dog to any unpleasant stimuli. I refer this video all the time to people who are having issues with their dogs.

  15. Excellent video. I think the dog’s excited barking is simply his way of telling you that maybe you shouldn’t be washing a toaster, a cast iron skillet, and bricks in your washing machine. He might just be trying to warn you to reinforce your floor, or to run for your life.

  16. I LOVED this video. There’s no waffling on at all – concise, clear and straight to the point. This delivery style is so refreshing. When you are eager to solve an issue with your animal you often feel frustrated, just wanting to get to the heart of the problem with quick instructions (especially when all you can hear as you are trying to watch is your furry friend barking in the background). Thank you so much, this video was a gift!
