Invisible barriers- dog training

Without using physical or psychological intimidation, you can teach dogs reliable complex behaviors like teaching a default "don't take a step off the grassy area unless released". Splash is demoing how she generalizes don't step off the grass in two locations where I have never trained her to do it. I only trained her in front of my house, and another location, but as you can see she generalized it to the canyon area near the park because it doesnt have 'grass' (or at least that is what I think). The day that I film this I actually WANTED her to go and get the frisbee for me when I did a crappy throw, but she would not leave the grass, and I had to go and walk my lazy self down there in the bushes to get the frisbee. I was very impressed with her generalization skills so I picked up the camera and filmed a "fake" bad throw. However, with most dogs you would have to go to a few locations to train, before they would generalize it to all locations.

  1. This is AWESOME! I would love this tutorial!!

Neither Mi or Q will leave the yard (even with the gate wide open) without me but I am oblivious as to how I trained that. Mi won’t even leave with all the doors open and me leaving if I say, “Oh Mi you have to stay here”. Again, DON”T know how I trained it, so can’t communicate it to others. Once again, Emily to the rescue!

  2. I like the 2nd one best! In the 1st one you keep telling him to get it. He has such a desire to please you but for some reason he won’t go get it.
Can’t wait to see the tutorial on this invisible barrier!

  3. Like everyone else I’m looking forward to the tutorial. I’ve only ever seen this taught with positive punishment. I’ll be taking notes since so many of the parks I take my dog to are unfenced and close to roads. I can’t wait!

  4. I’m looking forward to the tutorial here too. I live on a busy street and will have a new puppy soon. This has the potential to save a life.

  5. I really love your training videos! Here in Denmark you are a legend among me and my dog-friends. When I get into troubles with my dog, I turn to your videos, and oh my! how well everything works so fast.
I really want the tutorial for this “invisible barriers”. Didn’t you make it yet, or have I just missed it? Love and respect from me and my dog.
(Sorry, if there are many mistakes in my written English, as I said: I’m not from any English speaking country.

  6. Can’t wait for the tutorial. My collie pup is 6 months old and I could really do with teaching him this. Thanks for all the others …really really helpful as this is the 1st time I’ve tried clicker training..what a difference!!

  7. It’s good to see real trainers around. Not these people like “The Dog Whisperer” who have these crazy dominance issues. Thanks for your videos.

  8. I trained my dog to stop at curbs so that he never steps into the street without a release. We get lots of practice, as we walk every day, and he has to stop at every intersection. I figure it is one of those tricks that could save his life someday. My old girl was trained the same way. Looks like you’ve got some people still waiting for this tutorial! ๐Ÿ™‚
