A lot of people have been asking me recently how I trim my dogs' nails. I also show how to get your dogs nails to become shorter, if the pink parts have grown out. If you want to learn more, you should subscribe as I will be showing how to teach your dog to be as calm and relaxed as mine when getting his nails trimmed!

Caution- Don't trim your dog's nails super short before any competitions or large amounts of exercise. Don't have your dog roll over on his back right after eating a big meal.

THIS VIDEO IS ON HOW I TRIM MY DOGS NAILS. COMING SOON- How to get your dog to feel comfortable with nail trimming! And how to teach play dead for nail trimming.

  1. I can’t stop laughing at Splash just chilling upside down. Yes, do a tutorial! And I’d love to see one on how to teach your dog to love snuggling with humans and dogs 🙂

    1. Ok.  For the snuggling- its a side effect of working on multi dog settles – which we do everyday when we train our dogs.  I didnt really see the extreme snuggling of Kiko until we started having them settle together on one couch- obviously its best to start them further away from each other.  Another key aspect is that my dogs relate to each other through me, and with rules.  They learn lots of defaults- like not to bother each other while eating or chewing a bone, not to take each others toys away, and not to play near sleeping dogs.  The less annoying they are to each other the more friendly they become and start practicing the calm way of hanging out rather than the way that comes naturally to them.

  2. This is awesome and just in the nick of time! 🙂 We moved to the country a few months ago, and my fearful dog, who used to wear her nails down on her own with walks, now looks like Freddy Krueger, yikes!  Also, we’ve been diligently learning and practicing our exercises for calmness and training behaviors from your Reactivity video, which we looooooove! You are wonderful, thanks so much for all you do! PS – looking forward to a black nails and ‘lay on your back relaxed’ video 🙂

  3. Thank you Emily for all of your fantastic videos! This was very well done and very clear. 🙂 Great job replying to all those people too! Thanks to you, my dog is on his positive way to success. Keep up the amazing work!

  4. Your tutorials are always so inspirational! I would like to see one for training ‘settle on back’. I have been working on positive handling my pups feet since he was a baby, but he still does not care for it. I am eager to try a new technique if it might make things go easier.

  5. I used to cut off large chunks of my dog’s nails. I’ve tried your technique of taking little bites instead. She prefers the little bites /small shavings method and was more relaxed than usual when we finished up. Thank you for that. I am eagerly looking forward to your video on black nails and the upside down settle. Love and peace from Canada;)

  6. Great video! I’d love to see your followup tuturials about teaching the calm upside down position and foot handling in general to a dog or a puppy.

  7. Wow!! This is something I wish I would’ve started from puppy. You are very dedicated! Excellent video, love all of the close up angles & slow motion shots, they really help!! Excellent job!

  8. Thank you for sharing this video! I was able to trim both of my dogs’ nails today! One dog has always been pretty chill, but my older dog has been cut too short by groomers in the past and is terribly anxious. I was able to coax him in to position, treat him multiple times, until he was comfortable there, then I brought out the tools, treat, tools touching him, treat, until finally he let me cut his nails without the normal screaming (yes, dog – screaming is the usual reaction to even mentioning a nail trim). He has black nails, so I didn’t cut the nails short, just a few slivers off each and I plan to sit down 1-2 times a week and work on this with him until he’s comfortable just relaxing. Thank you again!

  9. I am a veterinarian putting together a lecture for other veterinarians about the canine athlete and I would love to be able to use this video for the lecture. Best description and demonstration of a proper nail trim I have ever seen. Great job!

  10. I thought I was the only one who trims dog nails while they are on their back. I have found that my dogs (if they jerk away) are more manageable and predictable, and belly rubs are great rewards between nails. The rotary tool is a great idea too, you can pick one up at Harbor Freight for about $8. Thanks for the video!

  11. Thanks for the Dremel tip! I tried this last night and its less scary than the clippers. My new dog doesn’t know play dead but he does like to relax on his back, especially if belly rubs are involved. I also had treats ready for when he got antsy, and gave him his favorite big treat when we were done! He has long quicks so hopefully we can get his nails shorter over time by doing this once a week.

  12. You should mention DO NOT leave the dremel steady and holding it on the nail longer than 3-4 seconds. It is VERY hot and heats the nail up and yeah, it hurts them because its so hot. Go in swift short bursts rounding around it for no more than a minute, plus it does tickle and vibrate their paw. Go on to another one. Come back to them all again. And yeah, cut them a bit first too. She did a great job showing everyone and doing it how. 😀

    1. that’s a really good point. The dremel does get hot if you leave it in one palace to long and do not keep it moving. This may not be obvious to some people. This woman has nice dogs.

  13. This is SO HELPFUL!!! I always don’t know how to do it correctly and always worry about cutting his quick. Nail clipping used to take hours but not anymore after watching this! You explained it so well, and the zoom-in shots were perfect. I tried your methods to cut my dog’s nails immediately, and I have never been any more confident ever. Thank you so much!

    1. Thanks so much 🙂 Yes! When I didnt have a dremel when Id moved to a different country I found my dogs nails getting longer and longer… because I was nervous to cut too much. Then I got a dremel again and lol made this video.

    2. @Dog Training by Kikopup You still have the Bamboo clipper…I have one from a long time ago I have to learn to sharpen the blades or find a new brand – but the ones I’m finding now seem not so good.

  14. I spent hours yesterday watching videos about trimming my dog’s nails. My dog was a shelter dog and hated her feet being touched. She would even bite. I couldn’t get her in the ‘cradle a baby’ pose until last summer. She was too nervous. I tried this on my bed today, just like you did. She did amazing! I trimmed AND filed her nails, and I think she may have even dozed off! Incredible, thank you!

  15. Such a fantastic video! So much great information without being overwhelming. Came here after searching video after video and not liking what I seen.
Its been awhile since I had to cut puppy nails so this was a great refresher! Thank you!
PS I WISH my dog was this easy 😂 ❤️ great job! I have a big white German shepherd and oh my, he’s a tad difficult with his nail trimmings 😅 I lay a big blanket on my washer and dryer and he lays still for me to do his nails. ❤️

  16. Thank you so much for making this video! I have been trying to get my dog more comfortable with the nail trimmer, and I had never thought to have her lay on her back! This will make it easier for my dog and for me! Thank you again!
