Train your dog to STOP pulling on leash

This video quickly outlines exercises to get your dog walking on a loose leash by your side. Put very basically FIRST you will teach the dog what you want them to do! And secondly, stop reinforcing them when they pull!

I demonstrate the exercise using a clicker, but if you do not have one, you can always use a verbal marker like yes etc. However you will get much faster and reliable results by using the clicker. If you hold the clicker in the same hand as the leash, and keep the treats in the other hand, you will find it easier to manage. Practice holding the leash, clicker, and treats when you do not have the dog attached to the leash yet, so you dont become overwhelmed.

A great book on loose leash walking, or how to stop your dog from pulling is-

My Dog Pulls. What Do I Do? by Turid Rugaas

You can get this book on www.dogwise.com and other places too. Its very short and has lots of pictures.

I would advise against using any forms of positive punishment when teaching any behavior, but especially leash walking, as startling or hurting a dog actually increases their stress hormones in their body causing the dog to be more hyperactive and more likely to become aroused and reactive towards other dogs and people (weather they want to greet them or not).

DO NOT DROP THE LEASH! I showed myself dropping the leash on a street with no cars/danger and another person there. This would happen during an emergency, if you trip or fumble. In no way do I support people who walk with their dogs off leash, you never can tell if a car will backfire, or who knows what, an earthquake etc with frighten your dog, and cause it to run into traffic. If you don't like holding a leash, simply tie it to your waist like I do with my dogs. However walking in a safe place where dogs are allowed off leash is perfectly acceptable 🙂

Happy Training!

  1. Thank you so much for making this video:)! It’s wonderful to see dogs taught how to walk nicely on a leash, without using any type of force or traditional corrective methods. I could just see the wheels in Max’s head turn as he was figuring out what you were asking:). I really like how you used a dog that didn’t know how to walk and showed the process. He learned faster than any dog I have seen taught with force. And that end…Simply amazing.

  2. Great informative video! Really clear demo of how to go about loose leash training — I may try the dropping-treat-behind foot and practicing indoors (shame we have such a small flat). Thanks for posting this — and really good work with your dogs!

  3. I followed your advice, I am shocked. Aurora is now walking like she should. We walked up and down the street in front of the house. Before this she would not walk at all. Today she was awesome! Later on today we will go further down the street. Thank you sooo much! I will watch the rest of your videos.

  4. I have a book about this exact subject, and it’s great to see that it actually works for you. Wonderful for your dogs as well! I have only just started out in my livingroom with a crazy german mittelspitz. Hope she will be as calm one day too!

  5. Your videos are so helpful! My 1 year old chihuahua Lucy pulls like mad on the leash and I’ve been looking for a video to actually show what I’m supposed to be doing for ages… and then I found this one! Thanks so much, you’re a great trainer

  6. I had a beagle for 17 years, what I did was, when we were walking on the side walk, she could sniff the whole time as long as she was on a loose leash, if she pulled, she didnt get to sniff more. Also I gave her the cue “go sniff” when we would reach a field and then I would follow her around as she sniffed . Then gave a cue “all done!” to mean time to keep walking. For beagles the sniffing can be the reward on the walk instead of treats.

    1. Oh lord I’m so grateful I’ve found this comment!
I own a Beagle and I’ve tried to teach him to stay behind me or beside me while loose leash walking, but I do not think that this the way we should go.
I now instead let him use the full leash length and will train him to walk beside me if a certain short leash length is being used.

  7. My family just adopted a coonhound pup. Many other people told us that he would never be leash trained and simply accept it. I tried your method and after 5 mins he was walking along by my side like a PRO! Thank you for such a great tutorial! Please keep up the great work!

  8. What an amazing video! everything made sense. Most of the time, my dog pulls and lunges at other dogs and animals. But sometimes she’s very relaxed, walks next to me, and actually ignores other barking dogs. I’ll try the walking back and forth tomorrow so she can always be relaxed on our walks!

  9. Thanks for the great tips! My dog is constantly tugging at the leash and barking at people and other dogs, so our walks together can be quite stressful sometimes. I’ll definitely be using this guide to teach her not to pull. I hope it works out. =) Thanks again!

  10. Thank you very much. Your videos are amazing! Just finished my first session with walking with my dog and this seems to be working quite efficiently. I’m not using any clicker though and still works wonders!.

  11. This video was so helpful! After practicing in the house for a little while, we went outside, and it was like I was walking a different dog. They stayed by me, and when they pulled I would call their name, turn the other way then drop a treat. I wish I would have watched this video years ago. I have never tried something that worked so quickly! Thanks!

  12. Out of curiosity, for those of you who have done this and gotten results, how long did it take? I have two lab puppies that I’ve been doing this with. They’ve slightly improved but it’s been about two weeks with only a little bit of improvement.

  13. I have a 2 year old cane corso rescue. She is strong and pulled on the leash like crazy! The first day of trying this method (with all the prerequisite steps that involve clicker training) has helped her immensely! Even when distracted she didn’t pull nearly as hard and then kept walking when I turned away. Thanks for making this video!

  14. Emily I love your methods and they DO work. I did the direction change as you did (learned it from Victoria Stilwell) and it worked beautifully on my husky that tried valiantly to pull my arm out of its socket. His parents were sled dogs in Alaska (we lived there when we got him) so pulling was in his blood. Nothing worked and when I saw an episode of Stilwell’s I tried it and was amazed at how quickly he learned. Timing is everything too. You have to do it suddenly so that the dog is completely baffled as to why it’s happening. Eventually it dawns on them, but you have to be consistent too. Many thanks for all your videos Emily. I love them!

  15. Great video, thank you!  I neglected to teach my dog to walk loose on a leash and now I have two… I just adopted an 8 mos old cattle dog who is now starting to pull as she sees her mate do it.  So now I have to teach both not to be monsters, lol.

  16. Loved your approach for teaching loose leash walking. Have unfortunately never taught my dogs but used a harness and the pull. Just started my 12 week old puppy yesterday with your method and he has GOT IT!!! THANK YOU SOOO MUCH.. Love what you do.

  17. I love rewatching this, it reminds me how some dogs can easily go back to poor walking as the owner gets lazy and is not paying attention, guilty as charge, my pup is super stubborn and tweaking as needed is always a good thing. Keep sharing, blessings.
