  1. Easy! The first thing you do is let the puppy go in the crate willingly with a toy or treat and once the dog makes itself comfortable in the crate you close the door. One thing you must remember is that you must not use the crate as a punishment, or else the dog will not like to go inside it, the crate should be a place where the dog feels safe. My dog loves her crate, when we say “Go to bed” she goes to her crate. And when we leave her with a sitter, she goes in her crate when she is scared.

  2. @FashionLove03 Clickers are to mark behaviours that you like without having to present a verbal cue, meaning the dog works out tricks by themselves. This generally leads to the dog learning the behaviour faster and more effectively. The dog learns to associate the trick with a treat. They provide a single tone that your dog gets used to hearing rather than a dog picking up our differences in emotions when we praise. Check out kikopups other vids, she has introduction to clicker training ones ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. Awesome! I’m getting my first dog on Friday and I’ve been studying your videos nonstop! Hopefully these techniques will work, even though my dog already has a set against the crate. He’s 6mo old and I guess he associates the crate with being left home alone all day, and he’s got separation anxiety! But I think if I start with a soft crate that looks nothing like the plastic crates he’s used to, I can start from scratch. ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. I have found a pretty good video which I think will work great along side kikopup’s “crate training part 1 ” . The video is called ‘ Shaping your dog to love his crate – Clicker Training Tutorial” by Pamela Johnson. Make sure to find that video. (I couldn’t post the link to the video.
I hope people find this useful! I did!

  5. Responding to mscervantes (from a year ago): if the dog goes into the crate under his own power, no release is required, any more than a dog sitting under his own power requires a release (assuming that you’ve taught a sit-stay with a following release word). My dogs have had no trouble understanding the difference.

  6. Please do a part 2! My puppy sleeps in his crate just fine but hates being in there all other times. He wines and barks but I was told not to let him out until he’s quiet. I feel like it’s not a positive experience for him unless he’s sleeping. He’s almost 6 months now and I feel like I failed to teach him to lik his crate. Part 2 would be wonderful! Your videos have been so helpful!

  7. Hi Emily! Iโ€™ve been a long time follower. Thank you so much for all these incredible videos.

What should we do when our dog willingly go into the crate to rest by themself but would whine and wait for us to release them when they want to get out?

Iโ€™ve been trying to ignore her until she โ€˜cautiouslyโ€™ come out by herself. I have no idea if itโ€™s too confusing for them to distinguish one instance from another (me giving a cue and release vs her willingly going in). Help!

  8. When you first bring your puppy home, do you just put your puppy in the crate even before you have the chance to do all these crate games?
