Puppy Pen Set Up – Professional Dog Training

This video goes over how to set up a puppy pen for your puppy. In the video I talk about setting up the pen specifically for your puppies needs, for example, creating an escape-proof pen if need be. I also cover how to initially get your puppy used to being in the pen. After watching this video you can check out these videos on:

  1. Fabulous as always! What tips do you have for the common situation where clients don’t have time to teach their puppy to be comfortably alone in the pen? I encourage a ton of enrichment, appropriate exercise, adaptil, etc. but clients really struggle with common situations where they have to subject the pup to something they haven’t trained because the training takes a while (confinement, husbandry/start buttons, etc.).

    1. for the pen, having them set it up right next to where they are, and perhaps having multiple ones, so one near the family dinner table the tv area and the bedroom, that way you can put the puppy right next to you and reach your hand into the pen or step over to comfort the puppy if they started to worry about being in there, then when the puppy is used to the pen they can start the training, but first getting the puppy used to being in the pen when having company around it can make it faster to teach them to be alone in it rather than just being dumped in one had have the door shut.

    2. I always say a disclaimer that there really isnt a “safe” anything, accidents can happen with anything you give your dog so you need to use common sense depending on your dogs behavior.

  2. All of your videos are really useful , but this is better to me, because I’m teaching my dog how stays calming into the crate. Thank you very much ❤️

  3. My puppy is getting delivered tomorrow, and I knew exactly where to go first for a training refresher!
Thanks Emily for the amazing videos, and for continuing to be such a top leader in positive reinforcement training

  4. Do you find any difference between using a pee pad vs a pee pad tray vs artificial turf vs patch of real grass for helping dogs discriminate between their pee area and other indoor surfaces like carpets later on?

  5. Hi Emily! Awesome tips!! As usual!!
Question: what brand is the white folding gate/pen? Thanks!!
Yes lots to think about. When I first brought my boy home I also got him a toy with a heartbeat so he wouldn’t miss his sister and mom as much. It became his fave till he ate it’s ear off and needs repair. Now he sleeps on my head:)

  6. Great video! Question…when do you stop using the pen and just transition to the crate only or partial rein of the house. Is it when they get too big for the pen or when they are fully housebroken?

  7. Thanks for posting another fabulous tutorial. Excellent explanations & demonstrations as always. Thanks so much.
Absolutely loving your channel & all what you do.

  8. Great video Emily!
We have definitely made mistakes introducing our pup to his playpen. He still does not love being in there even when we sit or stand right besides it – He will not nap by him self, so getting him in there and enforcing calm behavior is the only way to get him to sleep – Though he will fight it for some minutes with whining and jumping up on the sides.

Do you recommend using high or low values treats for this? I am worried that high value treats are getting him too excited.

  9. Do you have a video on how to train your puppy to use the indoor toilet occasionally? I love the idea of having that option when the weather is bad or when there are fireworks outside. Thanks for your videos.

  10. Very detailed and helpful tips for dog owners to set up the pen for puppies 🥰 we still have a gated area for our two years old dog so she can feel safe, relax and nap in while we are away or working in the office. It also gives me peace of mind knowing she won’t get into something dangerous when I am gone. thank you for taking the time and creating this great video!

  11. Hi Emily, I can’t tell you enough how I appreciate this video. You addressed solutions to some of the struggles I face. I’m going to use your method for my new puppy. You mentioned alternative to zip tie. What was it? My previous puppy chewed off zip tie and appeared in his poop. Also where can I find the bucket for the water? I love how it’s secure from spilling. As always I enjoy your video immensely ❤️

  12. Very instructional, thank you! I’m preparing for a puppy in the early months of 2022 and these videos really help a lot in understanding what I should be aiming for.

  13. I have been watching a lot of puppy videos. This one has been by far the most helpful because I’m going to have to kennel my puppy and a pen until I know she’s safe around my adult dogs. When she’s out my big adult dog will need to be on lead.

  14. Thank you for this video! I was contemplating between a playpen made of metal/plastic or a collapsible one for my 6 month old toy poodle (2kg). May I know the dimensions of the playpen and how big should a playpen be?

  15. I will be picking up a Labrador Retriever from the litter next week. I haven’t raised a puppy since 1991. My other dogs that came into the home were adults. This video gave me some very good ideas,, especially the linoleum and how you raised the edges. Thank you

  16. Thank you so much for being so generous with your wealth of experience and knowledge.
I’ve rescued now for the last 2 decades and haven’t lived with a puppy until 48hours ago. Our dream rural living, in the middle of 4 farms with horses and livestock outside each window and garden fence, we decided it would be fairest for all to start with a puppy young enough to environmentally condition to our unusual set of circumstances.
He’s here, he’s beautiful and I’m hoping to make his prn and crate area more welcoming and comforting. I’m currently sleeping by his pen in our bedroom. Going to start working on separation tomorrow. He’s already showing he’s becoming really engaged with me..I don’t want him to feel worried about me not being next to him and would love to set him up for success.
    Thank you!
