Puppy Safety – Every owner should know this – Puppy Dog Training

This is a very important topic for me. Puppies are not made of glass but we need to take care when we are training them, and when they are interacting with the environment and other dogs.

Safety tips:

•Warm up and cool down- take short walks before and after training.
•Work and play on non-slip areas- grass padded flooring and carpet –not slippery floors
•Teach your puppy not to jump up for things you are carrying.
•Work on behaviors and tricks that build muscles equally on either side of your puppy's body (If you are going to teach attention heeling, teach it on the left AND right side of your body, and spin left and right etc)
•Make sure your puppy is not sitting on one hip or rolled onto his butt when training behaviors involving sitting.
•Reinforce calmer movements, rather than chaotic ones.

  1. Awesome video as usual! Lumos is growing so fast and he’s so cute! Also I couldn’t stop watching Lacey in the background just because she settles in such hilarious positions

  2. This is the tip I was hoping for! I was wondering how many training I can use in one day. Should I teach only one thing untill it becomes perfect so that my dog doesn’t get confused? Or maybe two? three? THEN you showed me your training board. That is a treasure to me!

+I also love dogs backgrounding on this video. they’re, in my country’s way to speak, knocked up(expecially, lacey)! they’re all want to be around you, and waiting for lumos.
+I hope I can get more tips about excercise time amount. there are many videos about how to training, but not so many videos with basic things like this one.

  3. Thank you for this great video! I have previously learned that I should continue with the same (new) behaviour in a treaning session, not to confuse the dog. But I have learned now that I can mix it up.

  4. Would it be possible for you to give an example of a good weekly scheduled of basic training like what would you work on with a mostly untrained puppy. Also I have heard swimming is really good and really gentle workout for puppies would you agree with that?

  5. Do you plan to offer online classes at some point? I’m from Austria and would love to train with you but due to obvious reasons that’s just not possible.
Oh, and I would love to see more everyday videos of Lumos, those on facebook are fantastic. I feel like I can learn so much from simply watching you interacting with your dogs.

  6. We are awaiting our new Aussie pup, arriving tomorrow- and I was having some last minute trepidation over repeated admonitions I’ve found that this breed must be challenged mentally as well as simple exercise. Your videos I can already tell are going to become a ‘must see’. We shared our lives with a malamute for 14 years very successfully, although we always suspected (knew) she was not so much ‘well-trained’ from our efforts, but always willing to cooperate and extremely intelligent. It made up for a lot of deficiencies due to ignorance on our part I think! I must say, I was watching one of your videos and was very focused on you and the dog- it took about 6 minutes in before I realized the couches and floor around you were carpeted with other dogs. Extremely calm and secure dogs. Wow. That single fact alone shows me I’ve found a valuable resource. Thank you!

  7. Hey Em! Lumos is too big and a very, very nice puppy! Another great tutorial with info very useful for everybody! Thanks for sharing!

  8. Hello! Love your channel, its very helpful and I prefer your approach over the others I’ve seen. Its very nice to know you don’t have to intimidate to have an obedient dog! Thanks.

  9. I didnt know all this :O Everyday I realize I live in a social culture that embraces a lot of ignorance about dogs because nobody told me this before. Not even the vet.

  10. I thought it was a good idea that you made a weekly training routine for your puppy. Is there a way you could create one for people to follow? I notice I train the same things every day because I thought you had to and it gets boring for me and my dog. If you had something to download that was a training schedule I think a lot of people on youtube could really benefit from it. Just an idea.

  11. I just love how the other dogs watch you as you train Lumos! Also, I never knew repetitiveness was bad, I too believed it better to keep training one behaviour until it’s done well then move on. Love the idea of a rota! 💖

  12. These Kikopup vids are outstanding! I’ve watched a bunch of her vids now and she’s such a pro! I’m a psychologist, and while I’m formally educated in behaviorist training principles (e.g., I took an entire undergrad course on behaviorism where I trained a rat to press a lever in a Skinner box), I still struggle to train my family’s distractible (and spoiled) Australian Labradoodle. Watching Kikopup has really helped me use clicker training and reinforcement strategies more effectively — especially when I get frustrated when my dog gets stuck or regresses in learning.

    1. Thanks! We all keep learning. In my early videos, some of my terms or ways of saying things were unscientific that I really feel embarrassed about now. I am honored to speak at the Art and Science of Animal Training Conference https://www.artandscienceofanimaltraining.org/conference Where I get to learn from those in other fields like ABA. Its an amazing experience for me. This year I got to meet Skinners daughter Julie Vargas. I am always humbled when learning from others. Information is so precious!
